THIS WEEK AT STOCKER ARTS CENTER HAS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE.
NO MATTER WHAT YOUR AGE!

The Friday film

"THE CHORUS"

"THE CHORUS" will be screened only once - Friday, October 7th, 2005 at
8:00p.m. - So mark your calendar now and don't miss it!

2004 (PG-13) 96 minutes France/subtitles
Director: Christophe Barratier
Cast: Gerard Jugnot, Francois Berleand, Kad Merad, Jean-Baptiste
Maunier, Marie Bunel

"THE CHORUS" is an uplifting tale of a masterful teacher who put his heart
into his work and changed the lives of his students forever. With a
soundtrack of boys' singing, the lovely music of this film is the glue that
will stick to viewers long after watching it. Set in 1940s rural France, at
a school for poor boys who are delinquent or orphaned, the story feels
timeless in the way that it captures a crucial moment in the lives of the
boys involved. Ranging from early elementary school level to junior high,
the boys struggle for independence and self-expression. They defy
authority, especially when it comes from their brutally unfair and abusive
headmaster, Rachin (Francois Berleand). And in general, because they feel
neglected by their families, or don't have any family at all, there is
something disjointed and sullen about the boys. Only after their teacher,
Clement Mathieu (Gerard Jugnot), shows them that he will guide them,
befriend them, and teach them by peaking their curiosity, not by insisting
or punishing, do they begin to change. The choir he forms and the songs he
teaches the boys become a source of pride for them, allowing them to rise
above the confines of their meager and stifling school, and dream of a
bright future. Director/Writer Christophe Barratier has created a moving,
beautiful film with more than a few life lessons hidden within. The music,
written by Bruno Coulais, features the angelic voice of Jean-Paul Bonnaire,
who plays Morhange in the film.

"THE CHORUS" was a huge box-office hit in France and was selected as the
French entry in the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. In his
debut as a film director, Christophe Barratier has fashioned a tale about
the healing power of music and the big difference that good teachers can
make in the lives of their students.

"A well-nigh irresistible film celebrating the redemptive power of music." -
Kevin Thomas, LOS ANGELES TIMES

The Saturday concert

THE GLENN MILLER ORCHESTRA

Swings into the Stocker Arts Center with their big band sounds for one
performance only - Saturday, October 8th, 2005 at 7:30p.m.

Glenn Miller and His Orchestra made a big impact right before and during
World War II. The group had more hit records in one year than anybody in
the history of the recording industry! In fact, their recording of
"Chattanooga Choo-Choo" earned the first Gold Record ever awarded to a
performing artist. In September 1942, just prior to going into the army,
Glenn Miller disbanded his famous orchestra and eventually formed the Glenn
Miller Army Air Force Band to entertain the servicemen. Glenn Miller
disappeared on December 15, 1944. The bandleader went down over the English
Channel on a flight from London to Paris at the height of his popularity.

The Miller Estate formed the present Glenn Miller Orchestra in 1956, and the
band has been touring consistently since. The Musical Director for this
concert will be Larry O'Brien, who became the leader of the group on
November 25, 1988. This concert will include some of the following
selections from the Glenn Miller Orchestra library: "A String of Pearls,"
"Pennsylvania 6-5000," "Come Rain or Come Shine," "In The Mood," "Don't Sit
Under the Apple Tree," "Danny Boy" and of course, Miller's theme song
"Moonlight Serenade," which is still the signature tune of the Glenn Miller
Orchestra today.

Tickets for this evening of great music are $34.00 for Orchestra seating,
and $27.00 for Mezzanine seating. Tickets for this or any of the other
events and films are on sale at the Center's Box Office, which is open from
12:00 noon to 6:00p.m. Mondays through Fridays and one-and-one-half hours
before show time. The Box Office can be reached by calling (800) 995-5222
ext. 4040 or (440) 366-4040.
