OBERLIN, OHIO (October 4, 2005) =97 When the world=92s leading =
guitarists=20
gather at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music from October 21st through=20
the 26th, for the Guitar Foundation of America=92s International=20
Convention, they will perform the broadest range of classical guitar=20
music imaginable. At the centerpiece of the convention is the 23rd=20
Annual International Solo Guitar Competition, the largest and most=20
prestigious such contest in America. Since its inception in 1982, the=20
convention has been held in Ohio just one other time; several Oberlin=20
alumni are registered for the competition. This year also marks the=20
first Youth Guitarist Solo Competition. The contest, which will be held=20=

October 22 and 23, is open to musicians who have not reached their 16th=20=

birthday by the time of the competition and who are not represented by=20=

professional management.

	=93This is the biggest guitar event in the Western Hemisphere, =
and it=20
occurs only once a year,=94 says Oberlin=92s Teacher of Classical Guitar=20=

Stephen Aron, who is serving as director of this year=92s convention.=20
=93Bringing together a concentration of the greatest artists from all=20
over the world at one time is a very rare opportunity. The concerts=20
will offer listeners a snapshot of the best in guitar artistry =97 from=20=

senior, established players to the brightest young stars.=94

	Afternoon and evening concerts featuring distinguished musicians =
from=20
around the globe will be held in Warner Concert Hall on the Oberlin=20
campus. The evening concert series begins Friday, October 21, with=20
Cuban guitar superstar Manuel Barrueco and ends on Wednesday, October=20
26, with the four finalists in the International Solo Competition. All=20=

evening concerts will be held at 8 p.m., and tickets range from $6 to=20
$15. Late afternoon concerts will be held at 4 p.m., with tickets=20
priced between $6 and $10. Early afternoon concerts will be held at 1=20=

p.m., with tickets priced between $4 and $8. A vendor fair will be held=20=

in the Conservatory=92s orchestra rehearsal room.

	=93I feel like the host of the biggest party in the music =
industry,=94=20
says Aron. =93It=92s a great joy to be able to offer this incredible =
event=20
for the sake of my students and the entire Oberlin community. Thanks to=20=

the concert series, they=92ll have the opportunity to hear the most=20
astonishing guitarists =97 from Colombian virtuoso Ricardo Cobo to=20
Ohio-born Dominic Frasca, who writes his own music and invented new=20
ways of playing the guitar.=94

	Many winners from the International Solo Guitar Competition have =
gone=20
on to enjoy major performing careers, including several who will=20
perform at Oberlin, among them Ricardo Cobo, Antigoni Goni, and Lorenzo=20=

Micheli. The event typically draws 60 contestants and is conducted in=20=

three stages, including a qualifying round=A0before a panel of judges =
and=20
semi-final and final rounds, during which competitors perform before=20
both a panel of judges and the public. The first-prize winner will=20
receive $5,000, an extensive United States tour, and CD and DVD=20
recording contracts. The second prize award is $2,000, third is $1,000,=20=

and fourth is $500.

	Judges for the qualifying round of the adult solo competition =
will=20
include John McClellan, Carlos Molina, Jonathan Kulp, Nathan Fischer,=20
and Richard Greene. Joseph Mays, Frank Koonce, Enric Madriguera,=20
Jeffrey McFadden, Andrew Zohn, Angelo Favis, and Richard Provost will=20
judge the semifinal and final rounds.

	In addition to the GFA and Oberlin Conservatory of Music, =
sponsors of=20
this year=92s convention include Mel-Bay Publications, Savarez, the=20
D=92Addario Foundation for the Performing Arts, the Eva and George =
Jordan=20
Memorial Fund of the Jewish Community Foundation, and Guitars=20
International.

	Founded in 1973, the GFA offers its members the combined =
advantages of=20
a guitar society, library, publisher, continuing educational resource,=20=

and an arts council. Today the GFA is the largest multinational guitar=20=

organization in the world, providing serious guitarists worldwide a=20
full range of educational, literary, and performance resources and=20
opportunities.
