Review of

Forbidden

  By Dorothy C. Miller
dorothy.miller at case.edu

The U.S. premiere of Forbidden, a play by Pat Rowe, is =20
now playing at the Black Box Theatre in Cleveland, as part of the =20
10th Anniversary season of Red Hen Productions. (For dates and times =20
go to www.feministtheatre.org) Don=92t miss this riveting play about =20
two women, one the wife of a Nazi officer, the other a Jew, who fall =20
in love.

Unlike =93The L Word,=94 this is about real women. But it=92s=
 =20
not a =93coming out=94 story. When the play begins, they are already in =
a =20
lesbian relationship, amid very difficult circumstances, to say the =20
least. The play asks us to consider what we do for love, what =20
sacrifices are required and what the =93right=94 sacrifices are. =20
Congratulations to director Karen Gygli, Assoc. Professor Theatre, =20
John Carroll University.

Based on the true story of Elizabeth =93Lilly=94 Wurst and Felice =20
Schragenheim in 1943 Berlin, the story conveys the horrific brutality =20=

of the holocaust in the context of how individual people lived their =20
day-to-day lives within it. The story of these women was originally =20
portrayed in a book, Aimee and Jaguar, by Erika Fischer, and later =20
made into a German feature film of the same name.

Felice, played by Liz Conway, is a free spirit who, =20
while not ignoring the danger she is in, refuses to give in to it by =20
living in fear. Conway does a fantastic job of expressing Felice=92s =20
compelling personality and her refusal to act the victim. Lilly =20
(Elizabeth R. Wood) is clearly the more dependent of the two, but =20
nonetheless brave in her transition from deliberate ignorance to =20
rejection of the Nazi agenda. It was a pleasure to see the depth and =20
breadth of the women=92s individual personalities, as well as the =20
wonderfully conveyed love between them.

The other actors, Nicole McLaughlin, Dan Kilbane, =20
Heather Peterson, and Kevin B. Coughlin, are also excellent, =20
especially since Peterson plays two roles and Coughlin three! We are =20
never taken far away from the Nazi threat and these characters, =20
Felice=92s friends, the neighbors, a Jewish woman =93catcher=94 who =
turns =20
in others, and a Nazi officer, are there to remind us.

The play engages one=92s interest from the first moment. =20=

The lighting, costumes, set design (three small stages) all =20
contributed something positive. The rapidity of the scenes kept the =20
important movement of the pace. And I so appreciated the sound =20
system, a usual plague for me. I often skip stage plays because of my =20=

hearing, but I=92m glad I didn=92t skip this one.

             The play is on Oct. 13th, 14th, 16th, 20th , 21st, and =20
23rd. It=92s at the Cleveland Black Box Theatre, inside Cabaret Dada, =20=

1210 W. 6th St. Go to www.feministtheatre.org for times.=
