Miller South School for the Visual & Performing Arts is proud to present
a world premiere of a new play called The Kingdom That Forgot How To
Read, by Katie Markovich. Ms Markovich is a graduate of Miller South,
now attending St. Vincent - St. Mary High School. This gifted young
playwright began writing plays in 6th grade at Miller South. She has
co-written a number of plays for Ingénue Theatre Company in Akron. The
Kingdom That Forgot How to Read is her first full length solo work.
This delightfully satirical comedy looks at a world 300 years in the
future, in which one societyThe Kingdom of Hadaway -- has completely
forgotten how to read. The citizens have reverted to a Dark Ages culture
of jousts and duels for the men and idle gossip for the women. In a
post-petroleum world devoid of books and scholarship, no one in Hadaway
has the knowledge to invent alternative fuel sources. A crisis occurs
when King Joel dies and nobody in the court can read his will. Otis, the
last living librarian, is sent on a quest to find and read an important
document that will reveal who is to be the next king of Hadaway. He and
his friend Sasha travel to the Kingdom of Komovia, where the people love
to read and live a life in harmony with the world and each other. The
journey is filled with exciting adventures as the two meet up with a
number of very different readers who are suffering from the influence of
the non-reading Kingdom of Hadaway.
This production features a cast of 48 young actors and is directed by
Wendy S. Duke. Technical director is Jack Gwinn. Dance student Shayla
Smith provides choreography.
