Michael Bettine and his solo percussion project, Gongtopia, has been
invited to present a Gong seminar this November at the Percussive Arts
Society International Convention (PASIC) in Columbus, Ohio. This annual
convention gathers some 6,000 percussionists from around the world for
four days of seminars, concerts, and percussion manufacturer exhibits.
In conjunction with this seminar, he is also playing an 11 date solo
tour.

For over 30 years, Michael (Milwaukee, WI) has worked as a percussionist
and composer. In that time he has moved from the progressive rock of the
1970s, to jazz, free jazz, improv, and composed percussion music. His
work expands the role of percussion-as-time keeper, into realms of
texture-as-sound & rhythm.

He is acknowledged as one of the world's foremost experts on Gongs, and
currently works extensively with both Gongs and metal percussion.
Discovering Asian Gamelan music in the late 1970s, and the minimalist
works of Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and others, Michael went on to
compose expanded works for multiple Gongs where rhythm & melody became
one. His current project, Gongtopia, brings percussion to the forefront
in a one man solo performance. Using an array of over 50 Gongs, from 6"
to 32" in diameter, Michael's music is a panoply of metallic soundscapes
and haunting melodies. He draws heavily on the spiritual aspect of his
instruments, sacred geometry, and the traditions of cultures from around
the world.=20

Michael is also widely known as a writer. He is the co-author of two
books on drums & drummers, WHEN IN DOUBT, ROLL! (with English drummer
Bill Bruford), and PERCUSSION PROFILES (with English drummer Trevor
Taylor), and is currently working on three new books, including one on
Gongs (naturally). Since 1983 he has been a regular contributor to
MODERN DRUMMER magazine, and has written for other music magazines like
DownBeat, AVANT, Music Inc, and RHYTHM.

GONG BATH - Imagine yourself immersed and floating in an ocean of sound.
This is the Gong Bath. Monday, November 7, 6:30-7:30PM

The sound of the Gong is the universal OM or AUM. These sacred
instruments produce a wide spectrum of harmonics that are based on
pressure waves. The Gong sound vibrates the energy meridians in the body
and brings them into balance, creating a relaxed state. These sound
waves wash right through the body, affecting you on a mental, emotional,
and spiritual level. The sound can help relieve stress, depression,
fatigue, anger, and all kinds of fears along with many other conditions
related to lack of balance and harmony in the body. Please bring a mat
to lay on and a blanket to cover with.
