Character descriptions:
Wanda: ladylike and full of propriety and decorum. Early to mid 30s

Jeanette: flirtatious, brassy and full of the joy of spirituality. Late =
20s

Velma: the youngest - a rebellious spirit who bucks traditions. Age 16 - =
21

Mother Shaw: the matriarch - feisty nature, has the power to "usher in =
the Spirit." Late 50s to early 60s

Mabel: a minister's wife, owns about 200 hats. Mid 40s to early 50s

1 Man: the spirit of the crossroads, a vital part of the women's =
histories. Brings momentary life to the fathers, brothers, husbands and =
preachers who have touched the lives of the other characters.
