STOCKER ARTS CENTER ANNOUNCES CHANGE
IN TITLE FOR FINAL FILM OF 2005 FALL FILM SERIES

Robert Dudash, Director of the Stocker Arts Center Film Series, has
announced a change of titles for the final film of the 2005 Fall Film
Series. The Friday, November 18th, 2005 film will be "Mad Hot Ballroom"
instead of "Rory O'Shea was Here," which was originally supposed to be
screened. The change was necessitated by the lack of a sub-titled print for
the original title. Here's the detailed information on the new film:

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 18 at 8:00 pm
"Mad Hot Ballroom"

2005 (PG) 110 minutes United States
Director/Producer: Marilyn Agrelo Producer/Writer: Amy Sewell
Cast: 5th and 6th graders from New York City Public Schools and their
Teachers

The winner of the Audience Award for Best Film at the Cleveland
International Film Festival, the Philadelphia Film Festival and the Chicago
Documentary Film Festival, "Mad Hot Ballroom" is an uplifting documentary
about the children we meet and the maturation they undergo. Children and
ballroom dancing -- you read it right. Ten years ago, two New York City
elementary schools introduced a pilot program that made ten weeks of
ballroom dancing a required course. By 2004, the year this film was made,
more than 60 schools were enrolled in the program, whose teachers are
provided by the American Ballroom Theater. At the end of the course,
schools are given the opportunity to participate in a competition. Each
school can provide five pairs (plus one alternate) to dance in five
different styles: swing, the tango, the rumba, the merengue, and the
foxtrot. "Mad Hot Ballroom" follows three schools: PS 150 from Tribeca,
where many of the children come from homes split by divorce; PS 115 from
Washington Heights, where 97% of the families are below the poverty line and
drug dealers clog the streets at night; and PS 112 from Bensonhurst, a
traditional Italian neighborhood that is now 50% Asian; from the first class
to final bow.

"Mad Hot Ballroom" proves that the tango, foxtrot, swing, rumba and meringue
do not represent the last vestiges of a dying art, but rather are alive and
flourishing in the New York City public school system where the ballroom
dance program is run for fifth and sixth graders. The film follows students
at the three schools both inside and outside of the classroom. The students
are united by a zeal for the ballroom dancing lessons. As the teachers
gently cajole their students to learn the intricacies of the various dances,
director Marilyn Agrelo intersperses classroom footage with the students'
musings on life, many of which reveal a remarkable maturity. Gender and
race boundaries disappear as focus on the competition consumes the students'
energy, and the teachers are brought to tears as they see their prodigies
turning into what one teacher touchingly terms "little ladies and
gentlemen." "Mad Hot Ballroom" is one of the year's most uplifting slices
of cinema. It is a joyous, life-affirming experience.

"Crowd-pleasing! Both comical and genuinely touching." - A.O. Scott, THE
NEW YORK TIMES

"Don't miss an opportunity to see "Mad Hot Ballroom." It will sweep you off
your feet!" - Joe Morgenstern, THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

"Irresistible! A kind of "Spellbound" crossed with "Strictly Ballroom!" -
Kenneth Turan, LOS ANGELES TIMES

"Two Thumbs Up!" - Ebert & Roeper

Hope you'll plan to join us for this delightful film on November 18th, as
well as for the other upcoming films:

FRIDAY & SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 4 & 5 - "THE BEST OF YOUTH"

2004 (R) 358 minutes Italy/subtitles Friday - Part I 182
minutes Saturday - Part II 176 minutes
Director: Marco Tullio Giordana
Cast:       Nicola Carati: Luigi Lo Cascio; Matteo Carati: Alessio Boni;
Adriana Carati: Adriana Asti; Giulia Monfalco: Sonia Bergamasco; Carlo
Tommasi: Fabrizio Gifuni; Mirella Utano: Maya Sansa; Francesca
Carati: Valentina Carnelutti; Giorgia: Jasmine Trinca

A movie of this length, with this scope and grandeur, will not be shown in
many commercial theatres - and then only in a few large cities - which is
unfortunate. "THE BEST OF YOUTH" is a special film that demands to be seen
on a large screen, not just on DVD format on your home television set. This
great film gives us the depth and scope of a classical novel and is
certainly worth seeking out. We hope its length doesn't dissuade you from
attending. So make your plans to see it on the two evenings, back-to-back.
Although the scope of "THE BEST OF YOUTH" may seem daunting, its rewards are
wonderful, and this film about a family and time is one made for the ages!

The following is an excerpt from Roger Ebert's Four Star **** Review :

""THE BEST OF YOUTH" is ambitious as it follows two brothers and the people
in their lives from 1963 to 2000 from Rome to Norway to Turin to Florence to
Palermo and back to Rome again. Their lives intersect with the politics and
history of Italy during the period: the hippies, the ruinous flood in
Florence, the Red Brigades, kidnappings, hard times and layoffs at Fiat, and
finally a certain peace for some of the characters and for their nation.
The brothers are Nicola and Matteo Carati (Luigi Lo Cascio and Alessio
Boni). Their parents are Angelo (Andrea Tidona) and Adriana (Adriana Asti),
their older sister Giovanna (Lidia Vitale), and their kid sister Francesca.
And we meet their friends and their lovers. As the film opens, Nicola has
qualified as a doctor and Matteo is still taking literature classes but has
been hired as a "logotherapist" -- literally, a person who takes mental
patients for walks. One of the women he walks with is Giorgia (Jasmine
Trinca), who is beautiful, wounded by electroshock therapy, and afraid of
the world. On the spur of the moment, Matteo decides to take her along when
he and Nicola take a summer trip to the tip of Norway. Giorgia is found by
the police, but Nicola continues on his journey while Matteo returns to Rome
and, impulsively, joins the army. They are to meet again in Florence, where
catastrophic floods have drowned the city. Nicola is a volunteer, Matteo is
a soldier assigned to the emergency effort, and in the middle of the mud and
ruins, Nicola hears a young woman playing a piano. This is Giulia (Sonia
Bergamasco). Their eyes meet and lock, and so do their destinies. They
live together without marrying, and have a daughter, Sara. Matteo meanwhile
joins the police, takes an assignment in Sicily because no one else wants to
go there, and meets Mirella (Maya Sansa). She wants to be a librarian, and
he advises her to work at a beautiful library in Rome. Years later, he
walks into the library and sees her for the second time in his life and they
become lovers.

These people, all of them, will meet again -- even Giorgia, who is found by
Nicola in the most extra-ordinary circumstances, and who will cause a
meeting that no one in the movie could have anticipated, because neither
person involved knows the other exists. Because of the length of the film,
the director Marco Tullio Giordana has time to work with, and we sense the
characters growing older, learning about themselves and dealing with
hardship. The journey of Giulia, who has become a radical, is the most
difficult and in some ways the most touching. The way Nicola finally finds
happiness is particularly satisfying because it takes him so long to realize
that it is right there before him for the taking.

The film must have deep resonances for Italians, where it was made for
national television; because of its politics, sexuality and grown-up
characters, it would be impossible on American networks. It is not easy on
Italy. With the politics and the personal drama there is also the sense of
a nation that beneath the turbulent surface is deeply supportive for its
citizens. Some of that is sensed through the lives of the parents of the
Carati family."

The film is being shown in two parts, three hours each, with separate
admissions. No good movie is too long, just as no bad movie is short
enough. The two-hour limit on most films makes them essentially short
stories. "THE BEST OF YOUTH" is a novel.

"So in-depth, so appealing, so easy to sit through and so anomalously grand
scale that few who see it will ever forget it." - Mick LaSalle, SAN
FRANCISCO CHRONICLE

"An all-encompassing, life-affirming cinematic experience that resembles no
other." - Shirley Sealy, FILM JOURNAL INTERNATIONAL
