CASE DANCE PROGRAM OPENS FALL SEASON WITH MELANGE
Program features Cleveland premiere of lost Martha Graham dance

CLEVELAND?The Dance Program in Case Western Reserve University?s Department of Theater and Dance opens its 2005-2006 concert series with Melange, featuring works by Martha Graham, Gary Galbraith and Richard Dickinson. Performances are Friday, November 11, 12, 17, 19 and 20 at 8 p.m., with a matinee concert Sunday, November 13, at 2 p.m. at the Mather Dance Center, 11201 Bellflower Rd. on the Case campus.
            The program features:
Technotic Episodes is a continuation of Galbraith's creative endeavors to expand the integral meaning of working with multi-media and dance. The work blends these elements in such a way that requires the viewer to suspend their notion of what is seen as 'real' and what is being projected. Internationally recognized independent video artist and musician, Kasumi, a faculty member at the Cleveland Institute of Art, composed the original music for the three sections of the dance.
Dickinson?s new work is a modern dance piece set to a contemporary chamber symphony in three sections. A frenzied visual interpretation of the energetic score, the dance comments on mans? insatiable appetite for what?s next. Dickinson, a recent MFA graduate and currently a part-time lecturer in the Case dance program, is choreographing the work for a cast of seven that includes graduate students from the university.
Panorama, a rarely seen work by Graham, was originally created in 1935 for a workshop performance in Bennington, Vt. Her task was to create a piece in six weeks for her company of dancers and students in the workshop?some of whom had never danced before. With music by Norman Lloyd, mobiles by Alexander Calder, original lighting and stage design by Arch Lauterer and costumes sewn by the dancers and Graham, the choreographer produced and premiered an hour-long ballet, which was never performed again. With the discovery of some small segments of the dance were filmed, film footage was used to reconstruct a portion of the dance. The Martha Graham Dance Company represented this work in October 1992 at New York?s City Center Theater. It is this 10-minute long section, staged by Galbraith, principal dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company and associate professor of dance at Case. This is the first performance of this work on a Cleveland stage.
Admission is $10 for general admission, $7 for adults 60 and older and Case faculty and staff, and $5 for students. For information or reservations, call 216-368-6262 or visit http://dance.case.edu. (Media: For details about the concert, contact Sasha Thackaberry at Mather Dance Center at 216-224-9045 or sashatberr at aol.com.)
