THE WEATHERVANE PLAYHOUSE PRODUCTION
OF ANGELS IN AMERICA: Millennium Approaches
directed by Sean McConaha

FOUR FINAL PERFORMANCES WED - SAT, NOVEMBER 15-19 AT 7:30 PM.

    (October 17, 2005, Akron, Ohio...For Immediate Release)  Weathervane=20
Playhouse is pleased to announce performances of part one of Tony Kushner's=20=
epic=20
play Angels in America: Millennium Approaches, November 10 - 19, 2005.  The=20
play was first mounted last season as the inaugural production in Weathervan=
e's=20
new John L. Dietz Theatre. The traditional black box theatre, which previou=
sly=20
served as the scene shop, was renovated as part of the Playhouse's recent=20
capital campaign. Millennium Approaches will be remounted partly because of=
 its=20
previous popularity but also as a prelude to Angels in America Part II:=20
Perestroika which will be presented May 18 - June 4, 2006. This production=
 has two=20
new cast members: Ryan McMullen and Rachel Appelbaum.

    Angels in America: Millennium Approaches, written by Tony Kushner, is a=20
courageous exploration of the universal themes of love, loss and the=20
possibility of redemption. Kushner's full play is a  seven-hour, two-part pl=
ay -- a=20
masterful epic. It has received a Pulitzer Prize, two Tony Awards, two Dram=
a Desk=20
Awards, the Evening Standard Award, two Olivier Award Nominations, the New=20
York Critics Circle Award, the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award and th=
e=20
LAMBDA Literary Award for Drama. In 1998, London's National Theatre selected=
=20
Angels in America as one of the ten best plays of the 20th century. About An=
gels=20
in America, Newsweek magazine wrote, "The entire work is the broadest,=20
deepest, most searching American play of our time."
   =20
    Weathervane Playhouse presents part one of this two-part play which open=
s=20
with a rabbi's eulogy for Louis Ironson's immigrant grandmother, but the=20
nebbishy paralegal soon becomes embroiled in a personal drama emblematic of=20=
the=20
Reagan years. Louis abandons his AIDS-stricken lover for a married Mormon=20
lawyer, a prot=E9g=E9 of Roy Cohn, the censorious powerbroker who lives in d=
enial of his=20
own identity and terminal illness.=20
Tony Kushner, a gay Jewish socialist, was raised in Louisiana. His other=20
plays, A Bright Room Called Day (1985) and Slavs! (1994), are also concerned=
 with=20
the moral responsibilities of people in politically repressive times. Such=20
concerns may be especially relevant in America today, where, as he observes:=
=20
"What used to be called liberal is now called radical, what used to be calle=
d=20
radical is now called insane, what used to be called reactionary is now call=
ed=20
moderate, and what used to be called=20
insane is now called solid conservative thinking." At a time when many=20
playwrights were thinking small, Kushner crafted a sprawling tapestry unafra=
id to=20
embrace large political, social, and spiritual themes. By invoking the ghost=
=20
of Ethel Rosenberg as well as Aramaic texts, this Pulitzer Prize-winning epi=
c,=20
full of mordant humor and literary zest, uses its ethnic and sexual=20
specificity to illuminate the American experience.
