Clevelands Contemporary Youth Orchestra launches its 11th season with a concert Saturday, December 10, 2005, at 7:00 p.m., in Cleveland State Universitys Waetjen Auditorium.
The Contemporary Youth Orchestra is a nonprofit orchestra with more than 100 of the regions best young musicians, representing more than 40 high schools. CYO is the first and only youth orchestra in the country dedicated exclusively to the study and performance of contemporary orchestral literature.
For its December 10 concert, CYO music director Liza Grossman will conduct Gustav Holsts The Planets in its entirety, as well as Tan Duns Dragon and Phoenix (a movement from Symphony 1997 [Heaven Earth Mankind] by the Chinese composer best known for his film scores, including Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon); and Paul Crestons 1940 Concertino for Marimba and Orchestra, featuring CYO member John Stuart Ely, III, this years winner of CYOs annual concerto competition, on marimba.
Waetjen Auditorium is in CSUs Music and Communication Building, 2001 Euclid at E. 21st Street and Euclid Avenue. Tickets, available at the door, are only $10 each (and include a post-concert reception). For more information, call 216-321-3525.
