Parma Heights – The Cassidy Theatre is proud to announce the national community theatre premiere of the Andrew Lloyd Webber beloved musical “Cats”. This production marks the first time the classic musical has ever been produced by a community theater anywhere in the country. The production opened at the Cassidy on Friday, January 20th and will run until Sunday, February 12th. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8p and Sundays at 3p. The Cassidy Theatre is located in Greenbrier Commons at 6200 Pearl Rd., Parma Heights. Tickets are available at the box office or by calling (440) 842-4600.
The Cassidy Theatre is municipally owned and operated by the City of Parma Heights and Cats is presented through special arrangement with the Rodgers and Hammerstein Theatre Library and The Really Useful Theatre Company Ltd.
CATS first opened in London’s West End in 1981 then on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theatre on October 7, 1982, and continued September 10 2000. On 19 June 1997 the show became the longest running musical on Broadway until January 9th 2006 when it was overtaken by Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera.
The Cassidy Theatre went to great lengths to obtain the performance rights to produce Cats. Managing Director Chris Hnat credits “Luck and the grace of God and really good timing” with getting the show. “Like many of the other theaters, I had been writing for the rights year after year after year” she says. When the rights were released after January 1st of 2005 the Rogers and Hammerstein Library had granted the first-ever community theater rights to the Cassidy. “I opened the envelope and I couldn’t believe it” said Hnat.
The hard work hasn’t stopped at achieving performance rights. Because this is a national premier, the theater has put enormous resources into the production, even renting costumes from the actual company that costumed Broadway and National Touring companies of Cats and hiring special make-up technicians. Extensive lighting and set design are also being produced. The Cassidy Theatre production of Cats stars Megan Grimes as Grizabella, Geoffrey Short as Old Deuteronomy, Michael Snider as Rum Tum Tugger, David Dabney as Mr. Mistophelees and Eric Oswald as Munkustrap.
