Scratching, cutting, spinning and rocking are just some of the sights
and sounds the hip-hop dance crew Illstyle & Peace Productions will
bring to the Akron Civic Theatre Saturday, February 18 at 8 p.m.=20

Illstyle & Peace Productions, a hip-hop dance crew with local ties to
Akron, embrace the art of hip-hop culture and epitomize rhythm and
symmetry during their high-energy show. Their performance encompasses
hip-hop elements like Turntablism (DJ'ing), Break-dancing (b-boying),
MC'ing (rapping) and Graffiti Art, as well as beat boxing (creating
melodies with the human mouth). "Hip-hop is all about rhythm, character
and style," said Forrest Webb, managing director of Illstyle & Peace
Productions. "To capture the true meaning of dance, you have to allow
for individual expression - it's what gives hip-hop its unique flavor."

Dressed like athletes, the 10-person dance crew brings moves to the
dance floor that most people would never dream of doing - spinning on
heads, twisting and turning like gymnasts and clean, choreographed
combinations that explode on stage. The show's mix of freestyle and
choreographed dance moves highlight many different patterns of footwork
- from modern to ballet - and spinning to create an awesome effect on
stage. In addition, backdrops and props are used to fashion a specific
environment for each dance segment.=20

The dance ensemble is accompanied by singing, record and vocal
scratching and other D.J. sound effects. "Turntablism is an art form,"
said Webb. "Our D.J. spins and cuts records with body tricks and dancing
by using body parts like feet, elbows, mouth and forearm."=20

Audience participation is encouraged throughout the hip-hop dance show.
"We get our energy from the audience," added Webb. "Our show is fun to
watch, but clapping and dancing from the audience ensures everyone
enjoys the show."=20

Illstyle & Peace Productions formed in 2002 to help preserve and enhance
hip-hop culture through public performances, master classes and
lecture-demonstrations. The group members reside in New York City,
Philadelphia and Akron and have performed at more than 200 venues. When
asked what place was the biggest highlight, Webb quickly responds with
"the Civic is the highlight of what I've done so far because I'm from
Akron."
