"IL POSTINO" ("THE POSTMAN")

1995 (PG) 108 minutes Italy
Subtitles
Director: Michael Radford
Cast: Massimo Troisi, Philippe Noiret, Maria Grazia
Cucinotta

Based on true events, the late Massimo Troisi's quietly moving
performance powers this poignant and bittersweet Italian comedy about a
shy postman who develops a transformative friendship with the exiled
Chilean poet Pablo Neruda. It is 1953, and Neruda has been exiled from
his native land and is residing on a tiny island off the Italian coast.
It is here that he meets Mario, a simple man with a simple mind, whom
Pablo hires as his personal mailman. Mario is astonished by the amount
of mail that Neruda receives from women, and forges a relationship with
the poet to learn the secret of his unlikely power over the opposite
sex. Although Pablo is initially cold towards Mario, the two eventually
develop a friendship, with Pablo teaching the eager Mario the joys of
poetry. When the shy Mario falls for sexy barmaid Beatrice, the town's
most beautiful woman, Pablo helps him win her heart with poetic love
letters, which also inspire the postman to see himself and his quiet
fishing village in a lyrical way. After the postman and Beatrice wed,
Pablo is allowed to return to Chile, and does. Mario is now left with
many aspirations, but without the wherewithal to achieve them. Years
later, the Italian, now bored with his life and wife, realizes that the
man who changed his perspective on the world has forgotten all about
him. Desperate, Mario makes an outrageous attempt to get Pablo's
attention, but only time will tell if the poet will respond.

Nominated for 5 Academy Awards, the film is a graceful masterpiece with
beautiful performances by Philippe Noiret as Neruda and Troisi as Mario
Ruoppolo, the postman. The film was Troisi's dream project, and despite
his failing heart he insisted on finishing it and died the day it
wrapped.=20

British director Michael Radford's film works on so many different
levels--as a tribute to the power and beauty of poetry; as a tale of
brotherhood; and as a charmingly quirky romance!
