play, Bus Stop, by William Inge have been cast. The play which went into=20
rehearsal on January 15, has a cast of three women and five men. =20
=20
    The part of Cherie, the female lead, is filled by Sarah Peters, who jus=
t=20
recently played June in The Man Who Came to Dinner. Ms. Peters, who is a=20
junior at Northwest High School, plays the part of a young singer and dance=
r=20
who is spirited away from Kansas City, Missouri, by a high strung, =E2=80=
=9Cbull in the=20
china shop cowboy,=E2=80=9D named Bo Decker, who is played by Nate Cochran.=
  Mr.=20
Cochran is a graduate of Northwest High School and has played Mortimer in=20
Arsenic and Old Lace and Bert Jefferson in The Man Who Came to Dinner.
=20
    Janet Antal, who appeared in several productions at the United Methodis=
t=20
Church of Canal Fulton during the 1980s, returns to play Grace, the owner o=
f=20
the bus stop diner just outside of Topeka, Kansas. Her employee, Elma=20
Duckworth, is being played by Erica Melwinney, who is a junior at Northwest=
 High=20
School. Ms. Melwinney who has acted in youth theatre is making her debut i=
n=20
adult  community theatre.
=20
      Jake Schwendiman returns to Canal Fulton=E2=80=99s stage after a four=20=
year=20
hiatus to attend college to play Dr. Lyman, the alcoholic college professor=
, who=20
is traveling America in search of a new position and life while fleeing his=
 =20
past. Greg Rininger who just completed playing Sheridan Whiteside in The M=
an=20
Who Came to Dinner will play Will Masters, the Sheriff, a part Greg admits =20
is opposite of what he normally plays. =20
=20
    Ms. Antal=E2=80=99s husband, Tom, plays the good natured bus driver, Ca=
rl, while=20
making his debut in community theatre. The part of Virgil Blessing, the=20
older cowboy who has raised Bo Decker since he was ten years old, is being=20
played by Mr. Van Gaasbeek. Twenty four years ago, Mr. Van Gaasbeek played=
 the=20
part at the North Canton Playhouse.
=20
    The setting for Bus Stop is an isolated diner just outside Topeka,=20
Kansas, during March, 1955. Dwight Eisenhower is President of the United S=
tates=20
and the Cold War is just starting. The Cleveland Indians are the American=20
League champions and the Brooklyn Dodgers are getting ready to make their d=
ash=20
to a world championship. The king of television is a frontiersman named Da=
vey=20
 Crockett, played by Fess Parker, and he and Buddy Ebsen try to save Texas=20
and America at the Alamo. Eight people are trapped at Grace=E2=80=99s Diner=
 in a snow=20
storm that has closed the highway that night. By morning everyone=E2=80=
=99s life has =20
changed, some for the better, some not.
=20
    Bus Stop was Marilyn Monroe=E2=80=99s breakout movie and many critics b=
elieve=20
that she shed her ditzy blonde image with it. The movie also was the debut=
 for=20
Don Murray and Hope Lange who have had long careers in television. Arthur=20=
O=E2=80=99
Connell who played Virgil received numerous plaudits for his portrayal of=20
the father figure to Bo Decker.
=20
   The play will be presented in two acts March 3-5 and 10-12. It will be=20
presented in the Fellowship Hall Theatre which resembles the bus station wh=
ere=20
these eight people were holed up on that wintry night in March, 1955. The=20
performance on March 4 will be in a dinner theatre format with members of t=
he=20
United Methodist Women serving a three course meal. The cost of the dinner=
=20
theatre will be $15.00 for adults and $13.00 for senior citizens. The cost=
 of=20
the  non-dinner theatre performances on March 3, 5, 10, 11, and 12 is $5.00=20
for adults and $3.00 for seniors and children under the age of twelve. For=

There is nothing like live theatre. =20
=20
Bus  Stop
=20
     It is March, 1955, in a small town just west of Topeka, Kansas. A=20
young girl, no more than sixteen years of age, is standing at the window of=
 Grace=E2=80=99
s Diner, a local hangout for the town and a bus stop for the bus that runs=20
from Kansas City, Missouri to Topeka. There is a massive blizzard going on=
=20
and the young girl who is a waitress at the diner realizes that she is snow=
=20
bound with Grace who is trying to find some information about the storm ove=
r the=20
 telephone. They know that the bus will have to stop for the night and wait=
 =20
out the fury of the storm. Neither Grace or Elma, the young girl, know tha=
t=20
by morning their lives will have changed.
=20
   Within minutes of the arrival of the bus which contains a driver and fou=
r=20
passengers, the quiet bus stop is turned into an arena of one of the most=20
raucous arguments that ever occurred. It seems a woman who is a third rate=
=20
singer in a fourth rate bar in Kansas City has been according to her abduct=
ed by=20
a love sick cowboy from Montana. She claims that the cowboy wants to marry=
=20
her. The only problem with her story is that she is carrying a suitcase wi=
th=20
all her possessions. While Grace, Elma, and Will Masters, the Sheriff, try=
=20
to calm her down and get the facts, Bo Decker, the cowboy, barges into the=20
bus stop and causes such a commotion that his good friend and father figure=
,=20
Virgil Blessing, has to intercede to prevent an arrest from occurring. It=20=
is=20
during this shouting match that everyone realizes that the girl is telling=20=
the=20
truth. Bo has put her on the bus so he can take her to Montana to marry=20
her. =20
=20
   After things calm down, Elma begins to be attracted to the mysterious=20
fourth passenger who claims to be an out of work college professor, who jus=
t=20
happens to have a drinking problem. Charmed by his accent and ability to q=
uote=20
Shakespeare from memory, Elma finds this man totally appealing as she envie=
s=20
the life of Cherie, the singer who has been abducted to be married. =20
=20
   Carl, the bus driver, complains to Will that the bus contains so really=20
strange people on this trip and he was so tense during the drive that he ha=
s=20
to take a long walk in the blizzard. Will finds that to be fishy and thoug=
h=20
he has some suspicions that Carl may have something else in mind, he wishes=
=20
Carl a good night as the bus driver leaves to take his long walk.
=20
    After he leaves, Grace complains of a headache and goes to lie down in=20
her apartment leaving Elma to run the bus stop. After she leaves, Elma tri=
es=20
to keep the passengers from getting bored. It is after her efforts fail to=
=20
keep everyone occupied that an major uproar occurs which leads to a fight t=
hat=20
no one has ever seen before in this town.
=20
    Will Elma run off with the stranger? Will Grace get over her headache=20
in time to save the bus stop? Will Cherie stay abducted or will she marry=20=
Bo =20
Decker who professes undying love? The only way to find out is to come see=20=
=20
Bus Stop by William Inge on March 3-5 and March 10-12 at the Fellowship Hall=
 =20
Theatre. The performance on March 4 will be done as a dinner theatre and =20
dinner will be prepared and served by the United Methodist Women. The cost=20=
 of=20
the dinner theatre will be $15.00 for adults and $13.00 for senior citizens=
. =20
Seating for the dinner theatre is limited to 80. Reservations can be made=20=
by=20
calling Mr. Van Gaasbeek at 330-854-4387, Sandy Smith at 330-854-3410, or=20
the Church Office at 330-854-3573. The cost of the non-dinner theatre=20
performances on March 3, 5, 10, 11, and 12 is $5.00 for  adults and $3.00 fo=
r seniors=20
and children under the age of twelve. For additional information, please=20
