Karamu House T.O.P.S Program

2006 Season

Karamu House, Inc., is a not-for-profit community-based arts and =
educational organization designed to encourage and support the =
preservation, celebration and evolution of African-American culture and =
provide a vehicle for social, economic and educational development.

In keeping with our mission the Theatre Outreach Performance Series =
(T.O.P.S) seeks to preserve and celebrate the rich culture and history =
of African Americans while encouraging tolerance and multiculturalism in =
a rapidly changing society. The T.O.P.S program achieves these goals by =
offering educational plays and workshops to both children and adults.

T.O.P.S. has established itself as an important resource to students and =
teachers throughout Northeast Ohio. Through touring programs, in-house =
performances, residencies and workshops, the T.O.P.S. program has =
enhanced the cultural creative lives of thousands of young people. =20

We have something special for everyone:  a collection of folk tale plays =
for elementary and middle schools, an original production celebrating =
African American history and culture for middle school, high school and =
universities and workshops in drama, creative writing, African dance, =
and creative movement.

Tales of My Folk
=20

Tales of My Folk is a collection of African folktales infused with music =
and dance that encourage diversity, multiculturalism and tolerance in =
our ever changing and increasingly global society. A teacher's =
educational resource guide explaining the origins of the folktales, =
cultural customs of the various African ethnic groups and basic theatre =
etiquette is available prior to the performance.  $650 per show /$100 =
for any workshop booked in conjunction with this performance.

On Freedom's Journey: From Freedom to Slavery and Back Again  =20

On Freedom's Journey: From Freedom to Slavery and Back Again is a =
dramatic presentation of historical speeches, slave narratives, music =
and dance about the road to freedom for African Americans in the United =
States. These narratives, speeches and songs capture the essence of the =
conflicts, contributions, and triumphs of African Americans from their =
departure from Africa, through slavery, to the Emancipation. A teacher's =
educational resource guide will also be provided. $650 per show/$100 for =
any workshop booked in conjunction with this performance.

are supported by a comprehensive teacher's educational resource guide =
and can be used to help teachers through the discussion process =
following the show.  After our actors perform in your school they can =
also lead special workshops in the classrooms.  In addition, our =
professional staff can design workshops and residencies to fulfill your =
needs and provide guest speakers and consultants to help with school =
productions and activities. =20
