The divine Nina Domingue returns to CPT in her one woman show, a sold out
hit in last year's Big [BOX] series. "Mo Pas Connin - or Torment", set in
the balmy summer heat of New Orleans, tells the story of Miriam Waters, a 65
year-old inactive priestess of the goddess Mami Wata. Miriam receives
orders from her higher power to reconcile with her family or they will be
lost. Will the torment end? This tour-de-force performance introduces us
to 8 other souls with interweaving story lines and we learn about life in
the Big Easy, a life now possibly lost forever.

About Nina Domingue

  <http://images.patronmail.com/pmailemailimages/498/37505/articles_2.jpg>

Nina Domingue as the Venus Hottentot in the CPT production of "Venus" by
Suzan-Lori Parks

Nina Domingue (Playwright and Performer) is a native New Orleanian. She was
last seen on the CPT stage in "Mrs Bob Cratchit's Wild Christmas Binge",
and has performed leading roles in the CPT productions, "Venus", "Nickel and
Dimed", and "Uncle Tom's Cabin." She recently performed at Great Lakes
Theater Festival in "Merry Wives of Windsor" and "You Can't Take It With
You," and Karamu's "For Colored Girls...." She was the first
African-American woman to graduate from the Master's Program for Acting at
West Virginia University, where she began to develop "Mo Pas Connin - or
Torment." "It is important to me to be a part of work that establishes a
more normative standard of representation for women; especially women of
color. To deny any of our stories is to ultimately deny our own humanity."

In his January 7, 2005 article about CPT's Big [BOX] Series and "Mo Pas
Connin" in the Plain Dealer, Tony Brown wrote:

"Nina Domingue was born and grew up in the steamy gumbo pot of New Orleans,
black and Catholic and the daughter of a woman who committed suicide when
Domingue was 4.

As such, she has a lot of ghosts (including the Holy Ghost) rattling around.
"And they keep talkin' to me," said Domingue, one of Cleveland's most
exciting twentysomething stage actors.

"Mo Pas Connin" is Creole for "I don't know," the opening of an expression
meaning, "I don't know what it is that torments me so," and is pronounced
moe-pock-uh-neen.

"Mo Pas Connin" is nothing but thorny issues, perhaps most prominently is
the whole idea of "color" and its gradations.

Each of the nine characters - beginning with narrator Miriam Waters, a
65-year old priestess of the goddess Mimi Wata - is identified in Domingue's
script by the relative darkness or lightness of her skin.

"I identify as an African-American in Cleveland," said Domingue, who has -
as she describes Christine, a character in "Mo Pas Connin" very much like
Domingue herself - "a fair complexion, more olive-toned."

"But in New Orleans, I would be identified as Creole," descended from the
original white French settlers of Louisiana and black West Africans. "I
know black Domingues, Creole Domingues and white Domingues."

The color thing is only one of many issues Domingue works out in "Mo Pas
Connin," including religious issues in heavily Roman Catholic New Orleans.

Much of the artist's baggage comes into play when Christine - the character
most like Domingue - talks about her mother's suicide.

"In the the Catholic Church, everything is the devil, and suicide is this
great sin," Domingue said. "After her death, nobody could even talk about
her, and she couldn't be buried in sacred ground. My mother's family is from
here, so she's buried here, where no one knows."

Domingue began writing the play while in the graduate acting program at West
Virginia University, where in 2002 she became the first black woman to earn
a master's degree. She performed it there and then did it in her
undergraduate alma mater, Dillard University, a historically black school in
New Orleans.

In addition to being busy onstage since her arrival on the Cleveland scene
even before she started graduate school in West Virginia, Domingue has also
been busy on the personal front. She met a man, real estate and professional
percussionist Jonathan Glover, got married and has a 4-year old daughter,
Jinle (a Yoruba name pronounced gin-LAY.)

But even that has a theatrical angle. Her father-in-law, Hassan Rogers, is a
director. He introduced the happy couple and will direct "Mo Pas Connin."

"When I got her here, I said, 'I'm not letting you leave Cleveland,' Rogers
said. "My son was instrumental in doing that."
