FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

The Oberlin College Choir Joins the Kronos Quartet for
a Multi-Media Concert Presented by The Cleveland Museum of Art=92s VIVA!=20=

and Gala Around Town Series on Feb. 25

OBERLIN, OHIO (Feb. 17, 2006) =97 The Oberlin College Choir, directed by=20=

Associate Professor of Choral Conducting Hugh Floyd, will join the=20
Kronos Quartet in a multi-media concert experience at Cleveland=92s=20
Masonic Temple and Performing Arts Center on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2006,=20
at 7:30 p.m. The concert features Terry Riley=92s Sun Rings, an amalgam=20=

of choral music, electronic sounds from outer space, and dazzling=20
visual projections from the Milky Way. The Cleveland Museum of Art=20
(CMA) presents the event as part of its VIVA! and Gala Around Town=20
Series.
	Admission to the performance is $39 for the general public, $34 =
for=20
CMA members, and $10 for students with a valid I.D. To order tickets,=20
please call 1-888-CMA-0033 or visit www.cma.org/perform.
	Completed in 2002, Riley=92s Sun Rings uses the sounds of space =
to=20
influence the writing of the string quartet, allowing for interplay=20
between recorded space sounds and live string playing. Commissioned by=20=

NASA, Sun Rings features music by Riley that incorporates sounds from=20
the Milky Way such as crackling solar windstorms, the whistling of=20
lighting on Jupiter, and other sounds, triggered by Kronos using an=20
interactive computer. In addition, noted visual designer Willie=20
Williams (who has worked with the rock groups U2 and R.E.M.) prepared=20
images of the solar system photographed by the Voyager and Galileo=20
space probes that will be projected onto a screen behind the ensemble.=20=

Sight and sound coupled together, Sun Rings culminates in an=20
unparalleled visual and aural experience.
	A reviewer for the Los Angeles Times wrote of a recent =
performance:=20
=93Galaxies carpet the walls and Riley=92s generous melodies flow =
through=20
Kronos=92 four string instruments. The audience sat in spellbound=20
silence.=94
	Spending five months of each year touring concert halls, clubs, =
and=20
festivals worldwide, the multi-Grammy Award winning Kronos Quartet has=20=

boisterously broken down genre barriers expected of string quartets.=20
Performing live with contemporary greats Tom Waits and David Bowie and=20=

recording with such diversely talented singer-songwriters as Dave=20
Matthews and Nelly Furtado, Kronos has altered perceptions of what a=20
string quartet should be in the 21st century.
