Cleveland=E2=80=99s Gallery M to Host Reception for Spring Show "Smooth/Stri=
ated"=20
April 21 from 5-9 p.m.
Exhibit to Feature Artists=E2=80=99 Talk and Closing Reception
On Friday, April 21, 2006 from 5 to 9 p.m., Gallery M will=20
host a reception for its Spring show entitled =E2=80=9CSmooth/Striated.=E2=
=80=9D Featured=20
artists for this show will be cutting edge local metalsmiths Sofia Calderwoo=
d and=20
Susan Skoczen. The reception is free and open to the public. Hors d=E2=80=
=99oeuvres=20
will be served, along with locally-made, low-sulfite wine provided by Matt C=
ook
=E2=80=99s nearby Studio of Five Rings.
=20
Other events associated with the show include an artists=E2=
=80=99=20
talk =E2=80=93 Calderwood and Skoczen discussing their one-of-a-kind, collec=
tible metal=20
artworks =E2=80=93 on Saturday, April 22nd at 1 p.m. at the gallery. There=20=
will also=20
be a closing reception on Friday, June 2 from 6-9 p.m. Both of these=20
additional events are free and open to the public.
=20
These two rising stars create valuable, unique metal pieces=20
that have been shown in regional, national and international exhibits. Both=
=20
artists have also taught at universities in the Cleveland/Akron area.
=20
Calderwood=E2=80=99s metal pieces were featured in Metalsmit=
h=20
magazine, which highlighted her utilization of unusual materials such as pip=
e=20
cleaners, false eyelashes or earplugs. Often, Calderwood incorporates seduc=
tive=20
touches like perfumes and powders within her creations. Light, fluffy pink=20
touches add visual impact and allure to her smooth metal pieces.
=20
Skoczen, an MFA graduate of the Rhode Island School of=20
Design, currently teaches in the Cleveland Institute of Art=E2=80=99s Jewelr=
y Department. =20
Skoczen=E2=80=99s brooches play with the concept of being able to wear an id=
ea. More=20
structured, her pieces focus on breaking apart, creating lines, and expressi=
ng=20
human interactions through the work.
=20
Following the opening, the artists=E2=80=99 work will be on=20=
exhibit=20
through Friday, June 2. Gallery hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from=
=20
6:30 to 9:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and by=20
appointment.
