On Friday, April 21, 2006 from 5 to 9 p.m., Gallery M will host a reception=20
for its Spring show entitled =E2=80=9CSmooth/Striated.=E2=80=9D Featured art=
ists for this show=20
will be cutting edge local metalsmiths Sofia Calderwood and Susan Skoczen.=20
The reception is free and open to the public. Hors d=E2=80=99oeuvres will be=
 served,=20
along with locally-made, low-sulfite wine provided by Matt Cook=E2=80=99s ne=
arby Studio=20
of Five Rings.

Other events associated with the show include an artists=E2=80=99 talk =E2=
=80=93 Calderwood=20
and Skoczen discussing their one-of-a-kind, collectible metal artworks =E2=
=80=93 on=20
Saturday, April 22nd at 1 p.m. at the gallery. There will also be a closing=20
reception on Friday, June 2 from 6-9 p.m. Both of these additional events ar=
e free=20
and open to the public.

These two rising stars create valuable, unique metal pieces that have been=20
shown in regional, national and international exhibits. Both artists have al=
so=20
taught at universities in the Cleveland/Akron area.

Calderwood=E2=80=99s metal pieces were featured in Metalsmith magazine, whic=
h=20
highlighted her utilization of unusual materials such as pipe cleaners, fals=
e=20
eyelashes or earplugs. Often, Calderwood incorporates seductive touches like=
 perfumes=20
and powders within her creations. Light, fluffy pink touches add visual=20
impact and allure to her smooth metal pieces.

Skoczen, an MFA graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, currently=20
teaches in the Cleveland Institute of Art=E2=80=99s Jewelry Department. Skoc=
zen=E2=80=99s=20
brooches play with the concept of being able to wear an idea. More structure=
d, her=20
pieces focus on breaking apart, creating lines, and expressing human=20
interactions through the work.

Following the opening, the artists=E2=80=99 work will be on exhibit through=20=

June 2. Gallery hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m=
