Cesear=E2=80=99s Forum is nearing its completion of the Joseph Chaikin/Sam S=
hepard=20
collaborative play, WHEN THE WORLD WAS GREEN (A Chef=E2=80=99s Fable), throu=
gh March=20
18th (Friday & Saturdays only) at Kennedy=E2=80=99s Down Under, Playhouse S=
quare Center.=20
 (216) 241-6000. In a prison cell, an old chef turned murderer, Glenn=20
Colerider, and a young female reporter, Kristie J. Lang, probe and cajole ea=
ch other=20
for the truth about each other. Here are some written perspectives on the=20
play, production and company:
=20
=E2=80=9C=E2=80=A6it=E2=80=99s a play about myth =E2=80=93 how humans shape=20=
and are shaped by it. In an=20
encounter between an old chef and a young reporter, it explores humanity=E2=
=80=99s most=20
deep-rooted psychological themes=E2=80=A6with a penetrating Glenn Colerider=20=
as the=20
chef and Kristie J. Lang as the guarded reporter.=E2=80=9D =E2=80=93Carolyn=
 Jack, The Cleveland=20
Plain Dealer, 02/06/06
=20
=E2=80=9CIn Chaikin=E2=80=99s words, his work with Shepard was =E2=80=98thou=
ght music.=E2=80=99  That=E2=80=99s an=20
apt term to describe this one act memory play, which has richly lyrical,=20
sensuous descriptions of both childhood memories and food=E2=80=A6even the w=
ay Colerider=20
slowly peels a mango is entrancing. As lovely as this dreaminess may be, on=
e=20
must wonder what Chaikin and Shepard=E2=80=99s message is in this play? As=20=
in any=20
fable, what is the moral point? Are they warning about the destructive forc=
es of=20
obsessive revenge and advocating forgiveness? Are they speaking out against=
=20
war?  Or both?=E2=80=9D =20
-Kerry Clawson, Akron Beacon Journal, 02/13/06 =20
=20
=E2=80=9CThe playwrights are so intent on mining the symbolic dimensions of=20=
these=20
characters that they leave large boulders of incredulity in the audience=E2=
=80=99s path,=20
forgetting that even fables must have their own internal logic=E2=80=A6This=20=
unreality=20
is further heightened by Michael A. Larochelle=E2=80=99s set, which presents=
 a plywood=20
cell with a curtain for a door =E2=80=93 not exactly up to Oz code for maxim=
um=20
security. If disbelief can be set aside, the elliptical recollections penne=
d by=20
Chaikin and Shepard are lush and resonant=E2=80=A6Glenn Colerider delivers a=
 profound=20
sense of quietly resigned exhaustion=E2=80=A6Kristie J. Lang is almost as in=
visible as=20
the playwrights intend her to be.=E2=80=9D =E2=80=93Christine Howey, Scene,=
 02/8-14/06
=20
=E2=80=9CAs presented by Cesear=E2=80=99s Forum, the two-character one-act c=
onsists of an=20
episodic series of interviews of a death-row inmate in his cell by a young=20
female reporter, interspersed with discrete monologues from each that voice=20=
their=20
unspoken memories and feelings=E2=80=A6the piece=E2=80=A6is determinedly ell=
iptical and=20
referential, repeatedly demonstrating the imprecision of language and the fo=
gginess=20
of memory. Admirably countering the murkiness of the text, Greg Cesear=20
directs with a clean, unfussy touch, and benefits from the equally spare tec=
hniques=20
of Glenn Colerider and Kristie Lang. At the age of nearly four score,=20
Colerider continues to be a marvel of energy, enthusiasm and clarity=E2=80=
=A6Lang is=20
blissfully unindulgent=E2=80=A6and displays a direct-gaze simplicity that is=
 both commanding=20
and appealing. One thing that can reliably be said about the doughty Cesear=
=E2=80=99s=20
Forum: When you descend those steps into its basement home, you=E2=80=99re=20=
guaranteed=20
to find a theatrical something unavailable anywhere else.=E2=80=9D =20
