Arts in the Cathedral of Church of the Saviour in Cleveland Heights is pleased to be chosen as one of 100 venues nation-wide to exhibit works of renowned artist and designer Viktor Schreckengost in celebration of his 100th birthday.
Viktor Schreckengost of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, was born in 1906, and earned a reputation as a leader in 20th-century ceramics and industrial design. A teacher at the Cleveland Institute of Art for over 70 years, he also maintained a full-time design career. Well known for his 1930 Jazz Bowl commissioned by Eleanor Roosevelt, which is now considered an icon of the Art Deco era, Mr. Schreckengost also created slab-form ceramic sculptures that helped elevate ceramics from a craft to an art form during the mid-1900’s. Mr. Schreckengost has received numerous prestigious awards, including the State of Ohio Governor’s Award for the Arts (2000), and is an honorary lifetime member of the American Ceramic Society. In honor of his 100th birthday in June, 2006, a national series of over 100 exhibitions will feature his work in museums, businesses, and a variety of venues including The Sculpture Center.
