Weathervane Playhouse Women's Board=20

presents Carol Starre-Kmiecik as

Legendary Cleveland TV Journalist Dorothy Fuldheim

The Women's Board of Weathervane Community Playhouse invites you to a =
one-woman show by Carol Starre-Kmiecik, who brings to life the feisty =
persona of legendary Cleveland TV journalist Dorothy Fuldheim on =
Wednesday, May 10, 2006.

Billed as a membership tea to interest new people in Weathervane and its =
Women's Board, the event begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Playhouse, followed =
by a reception, and is free and open to the public.

Starre-Kmiecik discusses Fuldheim's childhood in poverty in New Jersey =
and Milwaukee. In Milwaukee, she attended Normal College where she =
studied English and was cast as Juliet in a performance of Romeo and =
Juliet. She became a lecturer on social issues, then was asked to read =
the news for 13 weeks at Cleveland's Channel 5, the first television =
station in Ohio. "I was to be replaced by a man, but ended up staying =
for 37 years," Fuldheim was later quoted as saying.

Perhaps her finest moment was her commentary on the May 4, 1970, =
shooting tragedies at Kent State University. "What is wrong with our =
country?" she said on air. "We're killing our own children." The WEWS =
switchboard lit up with people demanding her resignation, and she told =
the station manager that she would resign if he asked her to do so. His =
response: "Dorothy, I think you are 10 feet tall!" Fuldheim died at the =
age of 96 in 1989.

Carol Starre-Kmiecik, a Lakewood resident since 1991, has been =
performing for 25 years. Her high school drama teacher at Lourdes =
Academy in Cleveland was Mary Rose Oakar, former U.S. Congresswoman. She =
has a Bachelor's Degree in Speech and Theatre Arts from Baldwin-Wallace =
College and studied Improvisational Theatre at Chicago's Second City for =
two years.

Fuldheim is her signature character, but she also portrays Amelia =
Earhart, Susan B. Anthony, Clara Barton, Clare Booth Luce and Mother =
Elizabeth Seton. Her goal is to tell the stories of courageous women who =
overcame obstacles to make significant contributions to our country.

Weathervane Community Playhouse was founded in 1935; the Women's Board =
followed in 1938 to offer volunteer and financial assistance.
