One Man - 50 Gongs! An exciting 2-Day Gong Event at the Passport Project
Global Community Arts Center.
Passport Project's Vibrations Series* continues with three exciting
events featuring Michael Bettine playing Asian Gongs. Bettine is
acknowledged as one of the world=92s foremost experts on these
instruments. Enjoy all three events for $40=97or see individual prices
below.
Sunday, March 26, 2:00-3:45PM: Gong Bath & Yoga Workshop with Bettine
and certified Yoga teacher, Deanna Black. (bios follow). Yoga means to
yoke=97to join together. Let us join together as we yoke movement and
sound. Practice yoga and be cleansed with the soothing sound of the gong
bath. Deanna shares basic yoga postures that restore and revive the body
while the sounds created by Michael relax and calm the mind. Open to all
levels, the yoga practice includes movement, strength and flexibility to
honor the place you are today and explore the possibilities for
tomorrow. The workshop concludes with relaxation and meditation. $30
Sunday, March 26, doors at 7:15PM: Gong Concert of Original Music.
Michael Bettine creates metallic soundscapes and haunting melodies with
over 50 gongs in this solo concert. $7-$15, sliding scale fee.
Monday, March 27, 6:30PM: Gong Bath. (detailed description below)
Michael conducts this healing event where the vibrations of these sacred
instruments move through the body and help bring balance and peace.
Please bring a mat on which to lay, and a blanket to cover with. $10
GONG BATH=97more info: Imagine yourself immersed and floating in an =
ocean
of sound. This is the Gong Bath. Monday, March 27, 6:30PM
The sound of the Gong is the universal OM or AUM. These sacred
instruments produce a wide spectrum of harmonics that are based on
pressure waves. The Gong sound vibrates the energy meridians in the body
and brings them into balance, creating a relaxed state. These sound
waves wash right through the body, affecting you on a mental, emotional,
and spiritual level.=20
The sound can help relieve stress, depression, fatigue, anger, and all
kinds of fears along with many other conditions related to lack of
balance and harmony in the body.=20

Michael Bettine=97bio: For over 30 years, Michael (Milwaukee, WI) has
worked as a percussionist and composer. In that time he has moved from
the progressive rock of the 1970s, to jazz, free jazz, improv, and
composed percussion music. His work expands the role of
percussion-as-time keeper, into realms of texture-as-sound & rhythm.
Michael Bettine and his solo percussion project, Gongtopia, presented a
Gong seminar in November, 2005, at the prestigious Percussive Arts
Society International Convention (PASIC) in Columbus, Ohio. This annual
convention gathers some 6,000 percussionists from around the world for
four days of seminars, concerts, and percussion manufacturer exhibits.=20
He is acknowledged as one of the world's foremost experts on Gongs, and
currently works extensively with both Gongs and metal percussion.
Discovering Asian Gamelan music in the late 1970s, and the minimalist
works of Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and others, Michael went on to
compose expanded works for multiple Gongs where rhythm & melody became
one. His current project, Gongtopia, brings percussion to the forefront
in a one man solo performance. Using an array of over 50 Gongs, from 6"
to 32" in diameter, Michael's music is a panoply of metallic soundscapes
and haunting melodies.=20
=20
=20
He draws heavily on the spiritual aspect of his instruments, sacred
geometry, and the traditions of cultures from around the world.=20
Michael is also widely known as a writer. He is the co-author of two
books on drums & drummers, WHEN IN DOUBT, ROLL! (with English drummer
Bill Bruford), and PERCUSSION PROFILES (with English drummer Trevor
Taylor), and is currently working on three new books, including one on
Gongs (naturally). Since 1983 he has been a regular contributor to
MODERN DRUMMER magazine, and has written for other music magazines like
DownBeat, AVANT, Music Inc, and RHYTHM.
Deanna Black=92s bio: My favorite quote is from Gandhi, =93Live as if =
you
are going to die tomorrow, learn as if you are going to live forever!=94
The classes I create accommodate a wide range of levels designed to
empower you to do more than you thought possible in a safe,
non-threatening environment. The benefits are more than meet the eye.
Your reactions and/or responses to the challenges in your physical
practice often reflect and carry over to those from the challenges of
daily living. With the community developed in class we can work
individually on our well being yet know we are together in enhancing our
world around us.
I have been in the fitness industry since 1985, teaching group and
individual exercise, cycling and yoga classes throughout the Midwest and
internationally. I have studied extensively with Shiva Rea, including
workshops in India, as well as with Shri K Pattabhi Jois, David Swenson
and his wife Shelly, Daren Friesen and locally Marni Task, Jan
Hauenstein and Brian Ballentine.=20
With a BSBA in Marketing-Management and a minor in athletic training
from Missouri Southern State College and later undergrad and graduate
coursework in advanced exercise physiology and psychology from Iowa
State University, my education continues to be diverse in dance, martial
arts, Pilates, yoga and massage therapy as well as a variety of
certifications and workshops by ACE, AFAA, AIFE and Yoga Alliance.=20
