Contemporary Ballet Workshop (Teens/Adults)

Prerequisite: Intermediate Ballet. Attire: Black leotard, tights, ballet

This dance camp is designed for the serious dancer, or dance teacher who
wishes to awaken, revive, enhance, and expand technique, repertoire, and
ensemble skills. A concise and classically based warm-up supports work
at center that focuses on clearly defined technique in the services of
movement exploration and dynamics.  An introduction to movement
sensibilities employed at GroundWorks Dancetheater conducted by Artistic
Director David Shimotakahara.

Junior Dance Camp (Ages 8 to 12)


Instructor: Melanie Szucs


July 10-14; 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; Tuition: $185 (split payment
available); Location: Creative Arts Building; Bring a bag lunch, water
bottle, towel, and mat.

Prerequisite: Minimum one-year previous ballet experience required.
Attire: Black leotard, stirrups or footless tights, ballet slippers,
cover-up sweat pants and shirt, hair worn off the face in a bun, and
jazz and tap shoes if currently owned.

The Junior Dance Camp is designed to enhance dance techniques along with
the understanding of the many art forms integrated into a dance
performance.  Ballet technique class will be offered each day.  Other
classes will include modern jazz, modern dance, hip hop, ensemble
improvisation, make up, costume design, rhythm tap, stories of the great
ballets, dance history, mime, acting, auditions, exercises, for injury
prevention, and nutrition for the dancer.  Students will also be guided
in ways of observing dance choreography as they critique dance films.

Swing Dance (Teen/Adult)  NEW!

Dancers will begin with six count patterns including triple step
footwork, send outs, pull ins, tuck turns, and pass bys.  The class then
advances to eight count variations with swing out, circle, and ladies'

This camp is designed for our youngest performers. It continues in the
tradition of our Little Folks Theater class and is a wonderful
introduction to the magical world of theater. Theater Angels will work
on basic theater skills (singing, movement, acting) in a lively,
creative, positive classroom. Young actors will perform in a showcase
for family and friends on the last day of the camp.

Designed for all students, whether or not they have prior performance
experience. Campers will work with theater professionals learning
techniques in acting, singing and dancing as they rehearse for their
show "We Oughta' Be in Pictures." This performance will be a culmination
of the entire camp and will feature acting scenes and musical numbers.
Actors will perform the show for family and friends the last day of camp
at 12:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on the Beck Center Main Stage.

SPW Acting (Grades 7 - 12)


"Sci-Fi Double Feature" in the Studio Theater

July 10 - 28; Monday through Friday; 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; 3 weeks;

This three-week intensive theater camp is for students who are serious
about a summer acting experience. Campers will spend the first two hours
of each day taking classes and workshops in stage combat and full-length
improvisation. The final two hours of each day will be spent in
rehearsals for "Sci-Fi Double Feature" using scenes from Star Wars, Lord
of the Rings, Sixth Sense, and original work.=20

This three-week musical theater camp is for students who are serious
about performing. The camp will mirror Broadway and its currently
running shows and culminate in a fabulous evening of musical theater.
In addition to preparing for the show, campers will also have the
opportunity to hone their techniques in singing and dance. They will
work with four professional directors and choreographers who will
challenge each of them and take them to the next level as performers.

The Summer Portfolio Preparation Institute (Grades 10 - 11)=20

The Summer Institute will be devoted to creating new artwork to enhance
student portfolios for use as part of entrance requirements for college
or professional art schools. The student will spend seventy-five hours
being mentored by academically trained professional artists in a studio
setting. The class will study figure drawing, painting and ceramic
sculpture from preparation to the finished work of art. Time will be
spent learning matting techniques, the importance of framing and
presentation, the process of documenting your work in slide and digital
form, as well as critiquing and resource material. A supply list will be
available for the student. Written parental consent is required at
registration.=20

Visual Arts Enrichment Camp (Grades 3 - 6)


June 12 - 23; Monday through Friday; 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; 2 weeks;

Campers Art Exhibition: 6/23 at 12:30 p.m. in the Main Building.

Explore the world of visual arts and different mediums such as,
painting, mask making, printmaking, and clay while learning about
different cultures. Be a creative participant designing and making a
clay tile mural which will be installed at the Beck Center, as a
wonderful addition to our permanent collection. The young artists will
also have the opportunity to create individual clay projects as well.

Students will be under the direction of experienced artists and
teachers, who are experts with children and the creative process. This
two-week camp is more intensive in nature and divided into two classes
per day with a snack break to recharge the young artists' energy. The
last day of camp will provide a chance for the young artists to display
their finished artwork in an exhibition. Supplies are provided, however
each student should bring one freshly washed plain white T-shirt.

Puppet Magic (Grades 5 - 8)

A collaborative workshop between the  Beck Center's Visual Arts
Education and Theater Education Programs. This special collaborative
class will combine puppet making and playwriting for a Beck Puppet Play
Production.  Young artists will explore the history of puppets and their
use in storytelling in different cultures.  Drawing on personal
experiences, the students will participate in writing an original play
for the production.  Having created special characters in the play, the
young artists will learn how to design and create their own puppet for a
one-time presentation of the play, on the final day of class, for family
and friends.

An Artist's View of Storytelling: Creating with Cloth and Recycled
Materials (Grades 2-5)

This special workshop combines the process of creating a personal story
or poem with the assistance of the Beck Center's resident storyteller,
Rachel Spence and translating that poem or story into a wonderful cloth
painting/wall hanging that each student designs and creates.  Students
will be using cloth, paper, found objects, wire, sewing, glue, and more
to create a three-dimensional story.  Explore new materials and learn
new techniques for creating personal art treasures.

The Beck Center for the Arts is one of the area's largest cultural and
performing arts organizations and the only institution of its kind on

to serving schools with a high concentration of economically
disadvantaged children and to offering multicultural programs which
foster understanding of the cultural differences of various racial and
ethnic groups.

*	Early Childhood programs designed to educate and inspire growth
in the very young.  The Early Childhood ABC (Arts at Beck Center) and
Hear & Touch the Music are monthly programs and are complimented by
weekly classes such as S.M.I.L.E., Kids-n-Tunes, Dalcroze Eurythmics,

*	Art Galleries including the Virginia Foley Art Gallery operated
