When it comes to swinging jazz, one would be hard pressed to find a
better musician with more history than Bucky Pizzarelli. Quite simply
he has done it all. He has backed most of the great singers of his time
including Sinatra, Bennett, Perry Como, Rosemary Clooney, and in recent
years his son John, who is becoming a major star in his own right.
Besides high profile TV appearances as a member of the Tonight Show
Orchestra, Bucky Pizzarelli has played on several film soundtracks
including the recent Woody Allen films "Sweet and Lowdown" and "Mighty
Aphrodite". He has collaborated with several immortal jazz
instrumentalists like Benny Goodman, Les Paul, Ray Brown, and Doc
Severinson, and is he has exerted an important influence on many of the
top jazz guitarists of the present including Gene Bertoncini, Howard
Alden, Frank Vignola, and of course his son John. Bucky Pizzarelli has
played every kind of venue imaginable including all the major jazz
festivals worldwide and at the White House in Washington DC. A
professor emeritus at William Paterson in New Jersey. He has also
received honorary degrees form Hamilton College in New York, and
Southern Illinois University.
Joining Bucky Pizzarelli for this very special two nights at Nighttown
will be his sons John on guitar and vocals, and Martin on the acoustic
bass. Also joining the formidable Pizzarelli family will be drummer
Tony Todesco. This engagement follows a very successful two night stand
featuring John Pizzarelli and his group in late February. This
engagement is in celebration of Bucky Pizzarelli's 80th birthday and of
his incredible musical legacy and family.
Don't miss the legendary seven-string guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli and his
family at Nighttown on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 28th and 29th.
All Music Guide Biography
by Scott Yanow
A superior guitarist who swing musicians in particular appreciate, Bucky
Pizzarelli has been a fixture in jazz and the studios since the early
'50s. Self-taught, Pizzarelli has long been a master of the seven-string
guitar. He toured with Vaughn Monroe before and after a stint in the
military. In 1952, Pizzarelli joined the staff of NBC and 12 years later
he switched to ABC; in addition, he worked with the Three Sounds
(1956-1957) and had several tours with Benny Goodman. In the 1970s he
was more active in jazz, co-leading a duo with George Barnes and working
with Zoot Sims, Bud Freeman, and Stephane Grappelli, among many others.
Pizzarelli has since kept up a busy recording schedule and plays often
at jazz parties. Bucky has also recorded with his son, John Pizzarelli,
on an occasional basis since the early '80s.
