Sleeping Beauty to premiere at the Akron Civic Theatre
Children’s Ballet Theatre (CBT), under the artistic direction of Christine Meneer
is pleased to present the premiere of Sleeping Beauty at the Akron Civic Theatre
for three performances, May 6–7. With a brilliant score by Tchaikovsky, Sleeping
Beauty is considered to be one of the greatest ballets from Imperial Russia.
This ballet is sure to hold the attention of both young and old as the classic
fairy tale comes to life. With choreography by Meneer, after Marius Petipa, this
dazzling performance will be brought to life by a highly talented cast of
dancers. The exquisite artistry of the costumes and luxurious sets will provide
the perfect framework for the dancers as they bring this wonderful story of the
birth of a princess and the spell of an evil fairy to life in this must-see
performance. World renowned dancer/choreographer, Jerry Burr has been
requisitioned to help with the staging and acting – a key element in the telling
of this wonderfully creative tale.

Children’s Ballet Theatre will be dedicating the premiere of Sleeping Beauty to
Mr. Paul A. Daum, Ph.D. He served as Treasurer on CBT’s Board of Trustees for
eight years and his sudden death in March 2005 was a great loss to CBT as well as
the Akron community. Mr. Daum’s endowment to Children’s Ballet Theatre, plus
generous support from The Margaret Clark Morgan Foundation, GAR Foundation and
the Ohio Arts Council, have allowed CBT’s dream of a new ballet to become a
reality.
Jennifer Moll, CBT alumni, will dance the title role of Sleeping Beauty. Her
Prince will be danced by Jurijs Safonovs. Both dancers are with Virginia Ballet
Theatre. Kelly Meneer will portray the evil fairy Carabosse and Eric Carvill,
Damien Highfield, and Brian Murphy from Ohio Ballet will also be featured. CBT
soloist dancers include Sunita Joshi (Lilac Fairy), Elizabeth Watson (Fairy of
Beauty) and CBT alumnus Lily Armington (Fairy of Happiness).

CBT will present three performances of Sleeping Beauty: Saturday, May 6 at 2:00pm
and 7:00pm; Sunday, May 7 at 2:00pm. Ticket prices are $20, $16 and $13 and are
available at the Akron Civic Theatre Box Office (330-253-2488) and (330-972-7570)
or TicketMaster at (330-945-9400). Log onto CBT’s website at
www.ChildrensBalletTheatre.org to receive a special discount ticket offer. CBT
is also offering “Girl Scout Day at the Ballet” on May 6. See the CBT website for
details. Doors open one hour prior to each performance. Plan to arrive early to
shop at the ballet boutique and have your picture taken with Sleeping Beauty. If
you enjoyed CBT’s Nutcracker, you will LOVE Sleeping Beauty!!
