It seems to me that issue is really abut the marketing
of the individual enterprises (theatres, companies,
artists, etc.). This is really no different than the
situation of a bar or restaurant. There are a ton of
bars and restaurants in operation ranging from fast
food to five star. Some make it some don't primarily
because they either meet customer expectations or do
not. Performing arts are no different.
In my town there are two semi professional theatre
companies, a high school program, and a number of
church based theatrical opportunities. I know
precisely what to expect from each of these. If I
wanted a slick Broadway presentation, I would not
"shop" locally. If slickness was my expection and it
fell short, I would not likely return.
The ritualistic aspect of live performance is a part
of our humanity so I do not expect it to vanish. I do
however witness performance becoming increasingly
grass roots and being found in less obvious venues
than grand procenium theaters. The folks who these
activities and market effectively will continue to
find audiences and create more performance
opportunities. I suppose the bottom line is that I do
not see the situation as being unhealthy, just
different and continually evolving.
Just my opinion.
