Shakespeare ("THE TAMING OF THE SHREW", visual art (photos and ceramics)
and an award-winning movie ("Good Night, and Good Luck")! Here are the
details:

Wednesday, April 12th
National Players present
"THE TAMING OF THE SHREW"

Student Matinee - 10:00am - Tickets: $6.00/each (90-minute version)
Evening - 7:30pm - Tickets $15.00/Adults; $10.00/Children 12 and under
(full-length version)

One of Shakespeare's bawdiest comedies, "THE TAMING OF THE SHREW" is a
love story that describes the volatile courtship between the shrewish
Katherine (Kate) and the cunning Petruchio, as well as Lucentio's
somewhat deceitful courting of Katherine's sister, Bianca, while posing
as her tutor. It begins in Padua, where Lucentio arrives to attend the
university, but his priorities change when he sees Bianca, a beautiful,
mild young woman with whom he falls instantly in love. There are two
problems: Bianca already has suitors; and her wealthy father, Baptista,
has declared that no one may court her until her older sister, the
ill-tempered Katherine, is married. Lucentio decides to disguise
himself as Bianca's tutor to gain an excuse to be in her company, and
has his servant, Tranio, pretend to be Lucentio so he can confer with
Baptista about marrying Bianca. Enter Petruchio, a brash young man from
Verona, who arrives in Padua to marry a rich woman, and does not care
what she's like as long as she brings him a fortune. He agrees to marry
Kate sight unseen. The next day he goes to Baptista's house to meet
her, and they have a tremendous duel of words. As Katherine insults
Petruchio repeatedly, he tells her that they will marry whether she
agrees or not. Several other characters take on assumed identities to
fool various characters so that they will agree to do what they want
them to do, only adding to the comedy and fun of the piece. Musical
theatre lovers will recognize "...SHREW" as the basis for "KISS ME
KATE."

The National Players production is set in the late 1950's, but uses
Shakespeare's words without updating the text. Bill Gillett, General
Manager of National Players, writes "we've set "...SHREW" in the late
50s because it helps with the understanding of why Kate is the way she
is. Instead of being mean and "shrew-ish" because she was born that
way, we see her as a rebel who doesn't want to fill the Donna Reed or
June Cleaver mold as is expected. Bianca, the "good" sister, plays the
Reed/Cleaver role very well, but in many ways through her actions she's
more of the "shrew" than Kate. To match Kate's rebelliousness she
needed a Petruchio that is her equal, so our Petruchio also has a touch
of the 50s rebel in him. I would describe him as a cross between James
Dean and Fonzie." =20

Do Petruchio and Katherine wed? What about Lucentio and Bianca? Does
everyone finally reveal their true identity? Who gets "tamed?" Is it
possible there is more than one "shrew" in the play? Come see the
National Players' performances of "THE TAMING OF THE SHREW" at Stocker
Arts Center to find out the answers to these questions. Don't miss out
on seeing one of Shakespeare's comedies performed live by America's
longest running classical touring company!

"GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK"
(Nominated for Academy Awards - Best Picture; Director - George Clooney;
Actor in a Leading Role - David Strathairn; Original Screenplay - George
Clooney and Grant Heslov; Art Direction; Cinematography. Received the
2006 Stanley Kramer Award, which honors movies that shed light on social
issues, from the Producers Guild of America.)

2005 (PG) 90 minutes USA
Director: George Clooney
Cast: David Strathairn, Robert Downey Jr., Patricia
Clarkson

With "GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK," George Clooney delivers a riveting
account of a crucial chapter in 20th Century American history and, in
the process, firmly establishes himself as a major force behind the
camera as well. The crisply paced, tautly scripted docudrama recounts
the events of the mid-1950s leading up to acclaimed CBS journalist
Edward R. Murrow's (David Strathairn) decision to stand up against fiery
Senator Joseph McCarthy, who was out to rid the country of communism.
McCarthy's seemingly reckless behavior, in which he condemned
individuals without giving them a fair trial, angered Murrow and his
producer Fred Friendly (Clooney) into action. The resulting few
episodes of Murrow's show, "See it Now," found Murrow on a personal,
patriotic crusade to challenge McCarthy and rid America of his callous
persecution. Set almost entirely inside the smoke-filled, pressurized
newsrooms at CBS, Clooney's assured picture moves at a breakneck pace.
Cinematographer Robert Elswit miraculously recreates the black-and-white
look of that era, giving the film an added air of legitimacy. And while
Clooney and co-screenwriter/producer Grant Heslov wisely chose to use
stock footage of McCarthy instead of finding an actor to fill his shoes,
they couldn't have found a better Murrow than in Strathairn, who
delivers his lines with heroic conviction.

"Good Night, and Good Luck says two things, at least, and they are worth
repeating: There is always the chance for one good man to make a
difference. And in 1954, Edward R. Murrow did." - Stephen Whitty,
NEWARK STARLEDGER"

The best film of the year. More important, it's one of the most
patriotic movies ever made." - Joe Williams, ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
