CLEVELAND, OH - The Cleveland Municipal School District (CMSD) in
partnership with Great Lakes Theater Festival (GLTF) and Playhouse
Square Center (PSC) will collaborate to present the seventh annual
All-City Musical, South Pacific by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein
II crowning the District's 2005-06 series of All-City Arts Programming.
The production features the talents of over sixty CMSD students from
across the District and will take place on the stage of the Ohio Theatre
at Playhouse Square Center, June 2-4, 2006. Tony Sias, Manager of
Performing Arts for the Cleveland Municipal School District, directs the
production.

The seventh annual All-City Musical is presented with new, generous
support from The Human Fund which contributed $150,000 to the school
District this year for its All-City Arts Programming to ensure that,
"artistic kids from all over Cleveland can continue to create, dream and
thrive," according to Andrea Wedren, Executive Director of The Human
Fund - a non-traditional foundation established in April of 2005 by
Andrew Rayburn, the fund's founder and chairman. According to its
mission, "The Human Fund effectively supports arts education programs
for under-served children of the city of Cleveland, providing ongoing
involvement and a commitment to funding several arts programs annually."

=20

"Last year around this time, the future of the All-City Arts Program was
truly uncertain," said John Eby, Director of Arts Education for the
Cleveland Municipal School District. "Through the generous support of
Mr. Rayburn, and all who contributed to his Human Fund, the CMSD
All-City Arts Program is alive and well. The support of The=20

Human Fund has allowed us to keep this program intact and actually grow
by including the visual arts as well. With these dollars supporting the
District's funds and augmenting the efforts and resources of our other
All-City Musical producing partners Great Lakes Theater Festival and
Playhouse Square Center, our students will continue to be provided with
opportunities to work with the finest professionals Cleveland has to
offer in all of the arts. Because of Andy Rayburn, our students will
have wonderful opportunities in their lives that will help them be
successful in whatever they undertake in the future. What greater gift
can one provide?"

The All-City Musical is a rewarding experience for the
students involved as well as for the professional artists that
collaborate to produce the production, according to the Tony Sias,
director of the production for the fourth consecutive year. "The
All-City Musical is an extraordinary program that provides students with
a structured arts-based experience that refines individual talents,
stimulates critical thinking, focuses creativity, strengthens social
skills and affords students an informed perspective on the world that
they might not have had if they were not involved in the program," said
Sias in a recent interview about the upcoming production. "These young
people are amazing. As a member of the production team, I find it
immensely rewarding to witness and play a significant role in the growth
and development that these students experience over our intensive
eight-week All-City Musical rehearsal process. They work diligently,
remain focused and emerge from the program with the ability to
demonstrate the skill and the discipline that it takes to be an artist
in the theater. It is deeply satisfying to be able to share this leg of
their journey with them."

=20

Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific tackles challenging social
issues of race and prejudice. Set in an island paradise during World
War II, two parallel love stories are threatened by the dangers of
prejudice and war. Nellie, a spunky nurse from Arkansas, falls in love
with a mature French planter, Emile. Nellie learns that the mother of
his children was an island native and, unable to turn her back on the
prejudices with which she was raised, refuses Emile's proposal of
marriage. Meanwhile, the strapping Lt. Joe Cable denies himself the
fulfillment of a future with an innocent Tonkinese girl with whom he's
fallen in love out of the same fears that haunt Nellie. When Emile is
recruited to accompany Joe on a dangerous mission that claims Joe's
life, Nellie realizes that life is too short not to seize her own chance
for happiness, thus confronting and conquering her prejudice. =20

=20

The production team for the seventh annual All-City Musical is a
distinguished group of artists from across Northeast Ohio. A new
addition to the All-City artistic company this year, Daniel Windham, the
president and CEO of the Cleveland Music School Settlement, will serve
as Musical Director for the production. An All-City veteran, Michael
Medcalf, founder and Artistic Director of Cleveland Contemporary Dance
Theater, will return to the production team for the fifth consecutive
season to create South Pacific's choreography. Cleveland-based
designers Terry Martin and Alison Garrigan will design the colorful,
multi-location set and richly textured costumes for the production
respectively. Lorain County Community College Production
Manager/Technical Director/Designer, Jeremy Benjamin will design lights
while longtime GLTF resident designer Stan Kozak will create the
production's soundscape.

=20

Opening Night for the seventh Annual All-City Musical South Pacific is
scheduled for Friday, June 2nd at 7:30 p.m. The production will
continue with a Saturday evening showing on June 3rd at 7:30 p.m. and
matinee performance on Sunday, June 4th at 3:00 p.m. =20
