            AL STEWART
opening act,
James Lee Stanley
and John Batdorf
  Thursday, May 11
8:00 PM
Glasgow native Al Stewart began his career playing guitar in Tony Blackburn's band the Sabres, and moved from there to the London folk club scene. After an unsuccessful single on Decca, "The Elf" (which featured Jimmy Page on guitar), Stewart signed with CBS and, beginning in 1967, released a series of albums largely consisting of introspective, confessional love songs. Love Chronicles was the only one to be released in the U.S., and the autobiographical title track, which detailed Stewart's romantic involvements, attracted a bit of attention for the singer's use of the word "f*cking" in a song with supposed artistic credibility. On 1974's Past, Present and Future, Stewart switched gears, exploring his fascination with historical tales, and was rewarded with his first U.S. chart album. Modern Times was even more successful, and Year of the Cat was an unqualified hit, selling over a million copies and spawning the Top Ten title single. Time Passages duplicated both feats,
but Stewart's creativity dried up soon afterward, and difficulties over his contract and change of labels prevented him from releasing any new material until 1984. Russians and Americans was highly political, but sales were disappointing. Even so, Stewart recorded and toured sporadically in the late '80s and '90s while devoting time to his hobby of wine collecting. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide
James Lee Stanley and John Batdorf have both been part of the Southern California music scene since its early '70s heyday. Stanley's enduring career began with a publishing deal with famed producer Bones Howe. His self-titled solo debut was released on RCA in 1974, and in 1979 Stanley formed his own label, Beachwood Recordings, on which he's released over 50 titles including 20 solo projects and two in tandem with Peter Tork. Batdorf's first brush with fame was with a band that was almost signed by Atlantic. His acoustic rock duo Batdorf & Rodney was later signed to that label by Chairman Ahmet Ertegun, and John will always remember auditioning for Ertegun in one room at the Beverly Hills Hotel at the same time the industry legend was signing the Rolling Stones in another. Batdorf was also in the rock band Silver, and has an acclaimed career as a film and television composer.
The two now-seasoned artists originally met back in the day at a popular rock 'n' roll club during Batdorf & Rodney's first wave of success, but had since lost touch over two decades ago. When James Lee Stanley was looking for a creative partner to bring "All Wood And Stones" to life, and someone recommended John Batdorf -- who he learned was living practically in his neighborhood -- he felt it was a collaboration that was fatefully meant to be.
Together, they brainstormed on all things Stones for close to a year, and their instincts and talents fuse beautifully on the project. "A major challenge," says Stanley, "was that the Stones don't write linearly. Their songs are often a string of vignettes, connected by subject. John and I are linear composers, so we had to get into that consciousness." That sense of discovery is evident in arrangements that respect the original song structures at the same time that they open them up to new possibilities. Far beyond merely "unplugged," "All Wood And Stones" is unprecedented. And undeniably a pleasure.

        DAROL ANGER'S
REPUBLIC OF STRINGS
and SARA WATKINS
  Saturday, May 13
8:00 PM
Darol Anger's multi-generational group The Republic Of Strings is the workshop, proving ground, and celebration of Anger's remarkable 30 year musical career. Featuring pioneering acoustic guitarist Scott Nygaard, The Republic of Strings introduces some of the best young string players in a quartet that delivers, more than ever before, Anger's well-known virtuosity, unique sound, and peppery sense of fun.
The group this spring is featuring virtuoso acoustic guitarist Scott Nygaard. Scott composes for and plays guitar in the R.O.S. Scott has distinguished himself as one of the most influential and intelligent guitarists in contemporary string band music. He has recorded and toured extensively with Tim O'Brien and Laurie Lewis. His own recordings are available on Rounder Records, and he is featured on recordings by Jerry Douglas, Chris Theile, and David Grisman. Nygaard incorporates bluegrass, jazz, swing, old-time and rock & roll into an liquid and forceful guitar voice. He is the editor-in chief of Acoustic Guitar magazine, and writes literary fiction in his spare time.
On cello, multi-instrumentalist Tristan Clarridge, three time winner of the Grand National Fiddle Championship, and the youngest fiddler ever to win that title. He has spectacularly adapted fiddle technique to the cello and plays a wide range of styles, including jazz, bluegrass, and Celtic music.
Tyler Andal is one of best of the new fiddle prodigies for whom no style or level of music is out of bounds. At 17, he has already won over 20 fiddle contests, including the Tennessee State championship. He met Darol Anger at Mark O'Connor's Fiddle Camp in spring of 2003 after studying with dozens of well-known fiddlers at music festivals all over the country. He performs internationally with the Ryan Holladay Bluegrass band and is studying music and audio engineering at Middle Tennessee State University.
Sara Watkins of Nickel Creek -- hottest thing on the acoustic circuit. In less than a year they have garnered two Grammy nominations, held a Top 20 spot on Billboards Country Album chart, toured with Lyle Lovett, backed Dolly Parton, had two hit videos on CMT, and were named by TIME Magazine "one of five music innovators for the new millennium."
Their traditionally flavored pop-folk lyrics and sparkling acoustic licks, performed by guitarist Sean Watkins, his violinist sister Sara and mandolinist Chris Thile, reflect an eclectic mix of influences that include bluegrass, classical, jazz and rock. The trio is making down-home music relevant for a new generation
