Two spoken word spirits collide over the course of five hundred years.
 The original Def Poet, (the Bard) William Shakespeare meets one of
our slamtastic treasures of today Mr. Al Letson (Playwright of "Chalk"
now being performed at Karamu House's Arena Theater).  The result?=20
HISTORY GETS A REMIX!

Auditions are being held this week (Tuesday and Wenesday) and next
week (Monday and Tuesday) for Julius X, a new spoken word
shakespearean slam by acclaimed poet Al Letson, directed by E.B.
Smith.  The piece is part of Karamu Theater's contribution to
Ingenuity festival at Public Square.

The play is based on Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, set in Harlem in the
1960's, and draws the parallel between the life and death of Caesar=20
and the life and death of Malcolm X.  The entire opus alternates
between colloquial speech, Shakespeare's text and slam poetry
(original pieces by Letson).  It's hard hitting political statements
are balanced with beautiful poetic images, fresh tendrils for any
language lover to sink their teeth into.

The cast of characters is the same as the Shakespeare text, and most
are followers of the Nation of Islam.  All are welcome to audition,
however, who have the vocal funkability to slam an audience with some
fiery language.

Audition Dates:

5-9 Tuesday
5-10 Wednesday
5-15 Monday
5-16 Tuesday

Callbacks will be on Wednesday 5-17

All auditions will begin at 6:30 Please bring a headshot and resume.=20
Sides will be provided to read from the text, but if you have a bit of
spoken word prepared (original or not) please have it ready as well,
though it is not required.

Performance Dates:

7-13 and 7-16  @ the May Co. building on Public Sq.
