TrueNorth Spring Concert - Press Release

The TrueNorth Chorale and Symphony continue their 2005-2006 concert =
season this Saturday evening, May 20th at 7:30 p.m. with their Spring =
Concert at Westlake High School's new Performing Arts Center. =20

The TrueNorth Chorale is under the direction of Richard A. Fortney, =
founder and Executive Director of TrueNorth Cultural Arts.  James =
Traxler conducts the Symphony.  In addition to the Chorale and Symphony, =
the TrueNorth Chamber Singers and the TrueNorth Jr. Symphony will =
perform.

The concert will feature Ralph Vaughan Williams' Dona Nobis Pacem.  The =
oratorio sets parts of Walt Whitman's Drum Taps, John Bright's "Angel of =
Death" speech, and passages from the Bible to music.  Vaughan Williams =
felt a great affinity for Whitman, who had volunteered in the military =
hospitals outside Washington during the Civil War.  Serving as an =
unofficial nurse and morale officer, visiting with injured men and =
writing letters for them profoundly moved Whitman, and this shaped much =
of his poetry.  Ralph Vaughan Williams had been caught up in patriotic =
fervor and enlisted in 1914, serving in World War I, even though he was =
already forty-two years old and had studied in Germany as a younger man. =
 He served as an ambulance driver with the medical corps and later as an =
artillery officer.  The experience was a profound personal =
disillusionment to a man who had hoped to find something noble and =
heroic in personal combat: he was especially affected by the widespread =
use of new technology whose sole purpose was mass killing, such as =
poison gas, aerial bombardment, and automatic weapons.  Dona Nobis Pacem =
 is an eloquent plea for peace, concluding not with unbridled optimism, =
but with hope and possibility. =20

Tickets for adults are $8.00 in advance and $10.00 at the door.  =
Students and seniors in advance are $6.00 and $8.00 at the door.  =
Tickets are available through any TrueNorth musician, or may be =
purchased at the TrueNorth Gallery, 33491 Lake Road in Avon Lake, open =
Monday through Saturday at 12 noon.  Tickets are also available at the =
door, with the ticket window opening at 6:45 p.m. on the night of the =
concert.  Doors to the auditorium will open at 7:00 p.m.  Westlake High =
School's Performing Arts Center is located at 27830 Hilliard Boulevard =
in Westlake, 3/10 mile west of Dover Center Road, behind the high =
school.

TrueNorth concludes its concert season with its' annual Patriotic =
Concert on Sunday evening, July 2nd, outside under the stars, as part of =
TrueNorth's Arts 'Fest Celebration, held at the TrueNorth Plaza that =
