LAUREL SCHOOL OBTAINS RIGHTS TO PRODUCE
TONY AWARD-WINNING MUSICAL
THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE
On May 3, 2006 Laurel School became one of the first high schools in Ohio to obtain the rights to stage a production of the Tony Award-winning musical Thoroughly Modern Millie. The 2002 Broadway production captured six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Orchestration and Best Choreography, and introduced Sutton Foster, who won for Best Actress in a Musical.
Thoroughly Modern Millie recently completed its national tour, with production rights only becoming available this year. Based on the 1967 movie of the same name starring Julie Andrews, the musical tells the story of Millie Dumount, a young woman who arrives in New York City in the Roaring 20s, ready to make a new life for herself. Music Theatre International describes the musical as: Filled with frisky flappers, dashing leading mean and a dragon-lady of a villainess audiences will love to hate, Thoroughly Modern Millie is a perfectly constructed evening of madcap merriment.
The production is scheduled for March 8, 9 and 10, 2007 at Laurels Rosaneil Schenk Stage. Auditions for male roles will be held in November 2006; all female roles will be cast using Laurel students. In preparation for the musical, a summer tap dancing class will be offered at Laurels Shaker Heights campus to both Laurel and non-Laurel students (Monday Friday, July 10-21, 2006 from 9 11:30 a.m.).
