If you though that you knew the story of The Princess and the Pea you may be in for a walloping surprise!!

Once Upon A Mattress tells the story with a twist. It seems that everyone in the kingdom wants Prince Dauntless (Joseph Saks) to marry except his mother, Queen Aggravain (Theresa Benyo-Marzullo) who finds no princess suitable for her son. Dozens of girls have been tested and rejected. The problem is that the marriage law of the land states no one may wed until Dauntless marries! The ladies and knights of the court are becoming quite desperate....especially Lady Larkin (Laura Wilson) and Sir Henry (Stephen Noreck) who find themselves facing a "small" dilemma. With hope fading fast Sir Harry begins searching for yet another princess!!

Harry finds Winnifred the Woebegone (Deana Stein) who comes from a swampy kingdom. Winnifred or "Fred" as she likes to be called arrives in court by swimming the castle moat rather than using the drawbridge. "Fred's" unconventional behavior gives the Queen the idea of using a test for sensitivity to eliminate her from the marriage sweepstakes.... a pea under the mattress!! Well, maybe twenty mattresses!!
A very talented cast of 22 rounds out this musical comedy.

Director Mark A. Zimmerman is excited to be doing his first play at WRP. He has worked as a director and actor in a number of community theatres including Weathervane Playhouse and Coach House. He is currently the theatre director at the nationally recognized arts program at Firestone High School.

Beth Ayers returns to the Barn as Musical Director, she previously directed Something Afoot here in the summer of 2004. Rachel Huffman as Choreographer and Donna Curfman as Costumer make their first appearance at WRP. Resident Artist Designer Walt Kaminski again designs the set. Marie Dusini is the producer.

By turns hilarious, raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the familiar classic tale of royal courtship provides for some side splitting shenanigans. Chances are you will never look at fairy tales in quite the same way!
