THE PLAIN DEALER (June 20, 2006)
Multicultural: Aurora Pow Wow brings entertainment, education

Did you know that Aurora has been having an authentic Native American pow
wow for the last seven years? Yes, right here under our noses. It's called the
Pow Wow and Family Festival and it's held indoors (think rain or shine) at
Aurora High School.
For the fourth straight year, the Aurora Pow Wow Committee (responsible for
the idea) is teaming up with Kulture Kids, a nonprofit organization that uses
the arts to promote multiculturalism and diversity. Kulture Kids can usually
be found presenting cultural awareness and educational programs to schools
and other venues throughout Northeast Ohio.
Aurora's two-day pow wow is a festival celebrating all things Native
American. "It has grown every year," says Maxine Klein, chair of the Aurora Pow Wow
Committee, "And it truly does have something for everyone. Children just have
the best time."
Activities include kid-friendly, hands-on demonstrations for corn husk
dollmaking and weaving, traditional dancing and ceremonies, food, music,
storytelling, rituals, artists, and a gift shop. "The authentic teepee is big hit with
young and old alike," says Klein. So are the dancers dressed in native
regalia.
This year, the event will take place September 9 and 10 from 11 a.m. to 5
p.m.. Plan to be there for the grand entry dance circle at 1 p.m. on both days.
