The Ingenue and the Aging King
Lakeland Does Sondheim, Cleveland Shakespeare Festival Does Lear

By James Damico
Few theatergoing experiences can match the electric exhilaration of being there when a talented performer suddenly flowers into a commanding, exceptional stage presence. For some years now, largely in Beck Center productions, Amiee Collier has been a reliably bright supporting figure through thick and thin efforts, with her substantial voice, able acting and cordial personality. Yet she's never been entrusted with the opportunity — or the burden — of carrying a show.
Finally given that chance, however, as co-lead of Lakeland Theatre's mounting of Stephen Sondheim's Sunday in the Park With George, Ms. Collier proves that she's not only capable of toting around the proceedings, but more than likely to run away with them. As the fictional mistress of 19th-century French painter Georges Seurat, she negotiates Sondheim's multisyllabic lyrics with silky confidence, and sings his often tone-tinkering music with pitch-perfect, lustrous clarity. Along with this impressive vocalism, she further imbues a considerably underwritten character with such a sparkling, mischievous-yet-grounded humanity entirely her own, that the combination winds up constituting a rational excuse for undertaking the project.
Any Sondheim musical has little trouble finding its quorum of champions. But even diehard enthusiasts don't collect in any great numbers around George. It's a small-scale work that would benefit from being even more diminutive.
The longer first act centers on Seurat's creation of his gigantic masterpiece, "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of the Grande Jatte," a depiction of numerous 1880s Parisians taking their off-day leisure in a popular park. In multiple scenes, librettist James Lapine has the single-minded artist sketching his subjects pursuing their ordinary lives while wrangling with him about how and if they should be portrayed. These intervals alternate with snatches of Seurat wrangling with his huge canvas, a conservative fellow painter, and his radical theory of pointillism (in which varied, unblended colors are dotted separately side-by-side on the canvas in the expectation they will be more vibrantly mixed in the viewers' eyes).
Also emphasized are the distressed grievances of mistress-model Dot (get it?) that Seurat is too wrapped up in his work and hasn't any time for her. Rearing its over-familiar head here is that exhausted soap-opera cliché of the obsessed genius who heartlessly neglects his worshipping woman. Consequently, Dot sails off to America with their newborn daughter, Marie, and her newfound, properly adoring husband.
Set in modern-day Manhattan, the second act is mainly a disconnected send-up of the superficialities, commercialism and critic-domination of the contemporary art world (for which read Sondheim's bitter analogy for the theater world), involving the artist-offspring of Seurat's daughter. Add to this a literal slide-lecture on Seurat, and repetitious, undeveloped duplications of the first act's themes in text and music, and it's hard not to conclude the evening would be just as effective and a lot spiffier if it ended at intermission.
A confirmed Sondheim aficionado, director Martin Friedman has put together a carefully detailed, attentive production. On a tight budget, the borrowed projections and drops — especially that representing the "Grand Jatte" itself — get this technically demanding venture over the hump. Similarly helpful is Keith Nagy's atmospheric lighting.
None of the mixed cast of youngsters and oldtimers is up to the stellar Collier, who caps her performance with an affecting, tranquilly simple second-act embodiment of the modern-day ancient Marie. As Seurat, Andrew Tarr — a proven performer in past outings — seems vocally overmatched, and is shy of the compelling magnetism the part could use. Among others in the sizable company, Curt Arnold, Don Irven, Emma Wahl and Emily Baron serve nicely in multiple roles, and shining particularly are the warmly attractive Kelly Pekar and veteran Mary Jane Nottage in dual assignments as an ice-queen critic and Seurat's semi-dotty mother.
But the real lure here is the chance to spend "Some Day in the Playhouse With Amiee."
