PERMANENT COLLECTION - Barrymore Award for Outstanding New Play/Cleveland
Premier (Drama) (Black History Month)

Written By Thomas Gibbons

Directed by Terrence Spivey

Arena Theatre, January 19 - February 11, 2007

(Previews January 17th & 18th @ 7:30PM)

Playwright Thomas Gibbons and Karamu Artistic Director Terrence Spivey join
forces once again as Gibbons plays both sides of the race card as he did in
"bee-luther-hatchee," which won critical acclaim at Karamu two years ago. "A
powerful, provocative piece of theatrical writing. You want to run down the
street twisting people's arms to see it," quoted Linda Eisenstein of
Cleveland Plain Dealer. This time, in "Permanent Collection," he explores
racial politics within the art world. Sterling North, an African American,
has just been hired as new director for a private arts museum under the
Morris Foundation. He discovers African American art tucked away in storage
and challenges the institution to display them amongst the present European
art. This most recent play is being produced in regional theatres throughout
the country. It is based on an actual account that happened in
Philadelphia-with a twist-which garnered national attention. (For ages 17
and up)

"Gibbons' intellectually charged drama is a beautifully balanced dialectic
that treats a complicated and emotional issue without cheap conclusions ...
Sophisticated and deft, it is a provocative treatment of the unanswerable."

THE TRIAL OF ONE-SHORT SIGHTED BLACK WOMAN VS. MAMMY LOUISE

AND SAFREETA MAE (Satire) (Ohio Premier) (Women's Month)

By Karani Marcia Leslie

Director Tony Sias

Jelliffe Theatre, March 2 - March 25, 2007

(Previews April 30th & March 1st @ 7:30PM)

A bristling political satire that centers around a young professional
African American woman who has had enough with black caricatures and files a
law suit, not against a local television program, but against two
stereotypical characters; the Mammy and the concubine Safreeta Mae. She
brings them to court-literally- feeling that these images have had a
negative impact on her life and making it in the workplace. The entire play
takes place in a courtroom. The Trial... was voted as one of the top ten Off
Broadway theatre events by Newsday magazine and winner of six New York
Audelco awards. (Contains Adult Themes, Content and Language
Parental Guidance Suggested)

"...a lightly rollicking vehicle of wit, humor and history."
Rohan B Preston, Chicago Tribune

" This is one of those embodiments of emotion and idea in theater that
remind you how reasonable the Greeks were when they said a god emerged from
a play and could be sensed in their midst." D J R Bruckner, the New York
Times

A COLORED FUNERAL- World Premier (Comedy Satire w/music)

Written by Gregory S. Carr

Directed by Christopher Johnston

Arena Theatre, April 13 - May 6, 2007

(Previews April 11th & 12th @ 7:30PM)

A Colored Funeral is a satirical, comedic, poignant and sometimes irreverent
look at
death in the African American community. Each culture has its own
traditions, taboos
and mores in dealing with death, but the African American community has
experienced
unique challenges, circumstances and hardships that have spawned many
creative ways of
coping with this universal phenomenon. It takes place in a funeral parlor
and spoofs many angles. Sound familiar? There is even a spoof on a character
late for his own funeral. This daring piece from the playwright of "Johnnie
Taylor is Gone" was first developed through the 13th Annual R. Joyce Whitley
ArenaFest and work shopped at the Cleveland Play House 1st Annual
FusionFest. (Parental Guidance Due to adult themes)

15th Annual R. Joyce Whitley ARENAFEST Festival of New Works

KING HEDLEY II - Ohio Premier (Drama)

Written By August Wilson

Directed by Caroline Jackson-Smith

Jelliffe Theatre, May 25- June 17, 2007

(Previews May 23rd & 24th @ 7:30PM)

This is the eighth work in the late two-time Pulitzer Prize winning
playwright August Wilson's 10-play cycle chronicling the history of the
African American experience in each decade of the twentieth century. It's
set in 1985 and tells the story of an ex-con trying to rebuild his life.
Peddling stolen refrigerators in the feeble hope of making enough money to
open a video store, King Hedley, a man whose self worth is built on self
delusion, is scraping in the dirt of an urban backyard trying to plant seeds
where nothing will grow. After spending seven years in prison, the title
character returns to a neighborhood gutted by Reaganism. Many critics have
hailed the work as a haunting and challenging tragedy of Shakespearean
proportions. Mr. Wilson is a two-time Pulitzer Prize winning author of
Fences, The Piano Lesson, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, Joe Turner's Come and
Gone, Seven Guitars, Two Trains Running, Jitney and Radio Golf. His plays
have been produced all over the world. Karamu has staged seven of his
earlier works within the cycle and some under Ms Smith's direction. This is
a grand salute to one of the greatest playwrights of our time. (For ages 17
and up)

"Grand [with] some of the finest monologues ever written for an American
stage, speeches that build gritty, often brutal details into fiery patterns
of insight.... You may feel the scorch of lightning." N.Y. Times.

"Exhilarating.... Wilson has endowed his struggling souls with a
metaphysical grandeur and a titanic vigor of language that is like no other
dramatist's. He takes the idea of tragedy and the common man to Olympian
heights ... [and] boldly tackles the big philosophical questions most
contemporary playwrights shrink from. He articulates these questions with
grounding, often witty detail and in an inner city vernacular that soars
into both unabashed lyricism and earthy anecdote.... There is no denying the
transporting, natural music of Hedley and phrases from it haunt the memory."
N.Y. Times.

Pulitzer
Prize winning playwright August Wilson's 10-play cycle chronicling the =
history
of the African American experience in each decade of the twentieth =
century.
It's set in 1985 and tells the story of an ex-con trying to rebuild =
his
life. Peddling stolen refrigerators in the feeble hope of making enough =
money
to open a video store, King Hedley, a man whose self worth is built on =
self
delusion, is scraping in the dirt of an urban backyard trying to plant =
seeds
where nothing will grow. After spending seven years in prison, the title
character returns to a neighborhood gutted by Reaganism. Many critics =
have
hailed the work as <em><i><font face=3DArial><span =
