Cleveland=E2=80=99s Gallery M to Host Reception for Fall Show "White Out" Se=
ptember 16 from 5-9 p.m.

On Saturday, September 16, 2006 from 5 to 9 p.m., Gallery M will host a rece=
ption for its Fall show entitled =E2=80=9CWhite Out.=E2=80=9D Featured arti=
sts for this show will be Yevgeniya Kaganovich and Anya Kivarkis. The recep=
tion is free and open to the public. Wine and hors d=E2=80=99oeuvres will b=
e served.
=20
For =E2=80=9CWhite Out,=E2=80=9D the artists have produced a collection of s=
everal dozen objects that engage the tradition and history of decoration and=
ornamentation, distill that tradition to one essential element and amplify=20=
it in contemporary terms. The work of both artists is a historical revision=
, a challenge of authoritarian historical forms.
=20
Both artists were educated at the University of Illinois and also at SUNY Ne=
w Paltz, where they studied under recognized artist Myra Mimlitsch-Gray. Thi=
s is their first dual show. Kaganovich and Kivarkis say, =E2=80=9CThe work=20=
exists as simultaneously present and absent, excessive and blank, silhouette=
 and form.=E2=80=9D
=20
Kaganovich is currently an assistant professor of art at the University of W=
isconsin-Milwaukee in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She combines familiar functiona=
l objects with decorative elements. This union of precious and experimental=
materials questions the cultural value of precious jewelry and transforms t=
he work into iconic images of jewelry. She was part of Gallery M=E2=80=99s=20=
very first show in 2003 and says of her experience: =E2=80=9CI was very much=
impressed with what [gallery managers] Todd and Debra made happen. Their e=
nthusiasm for the field is contagious, and it=E2=80=99s important they are p=
romoting and providing a venue for innovative work.=E2=80=9D
           =20
Kivarkis is a visiting assistant professor in Jewelry/Metalsmithing at the U=
niversity of Oregon, Eugene. She reinterprets imagery derived from the Vict=
orian Era and subtly mutates historical ornamentation through unlikely juxta=
positions. Rigid, formal Victorian and Baroque ornaments are combined with=20=
awkward, obstructive three-dimensional forms to manipulate and subvert tradi=
tional ornamentation.
           =20
Following the opening, the artists=E2=80=99 work will be on exhibit at Galle=
ry M through Saturday, October 21st. Gallery hours are Monday, Wednesday an=
d Friday from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.,=
 and by appointment.
=20
After its exhibit in Cleveland, =E2=80=9CWhite Out=E2=80=9D travels on to Re=
hoboth Beach, Delaware for display at Heidi Lowe & The Jewelry Studio.
