Hello! This =93THANK YOU, LOCAL MEDIA=94 edition of the Square Peg =
Promotions
arts calendar includes music concerts, theatre, dance, written and =
spoken

surrounding areas. Community events that defy categorization are =

=20

There=92s no shortage of concerts, theatre productions, festivals, art =

=20

Editor=92s Note: The local and regional arts scene has received some =
enjoyable
press coverage in recent weeks. As I began the next paragraphs by =
thanking
two individuals who have supported local artists for many years, I =
realized
that there are MANY people in the local media to thank. There are those =
who
have been plugging for Stark County=92s arts scene for decades, and =
others who
have just gotten on board in recent months. We enjoy and appreciate each =
of
you, so now it=92s YOUR turn to receive some much-deserved press...

No, this edition of our newsletter was NOT sponsored by the local media! =
But
gratitude is the order of the day when local media entities support =
local
arts. I=92m positive that there are others in the media who are helping =
to
promote the arts...and we haven=92t even begun to discuss the plethora =
of
online media and resources... so if I haven=92t met you yet or haven=92t =
named
you here, let=92s talk soon and remedy that situation!

and
continue through October 22. A new venture for the Massillon Museum, =
and
for many of the artists involved, =93Adaptations=94 will showcase an =
eclectic
mix of artifacts -- some rarely or never before on view -- alongside =
new
artwork in a variety of media. =20
The ten artists selected for this project -- some seasoned, some =
aspiring
-- are current or former Ohio residents. The artists were selected based =
on
their individual talents and the disparity of media in which they work:
glass, assemblage, sculpture, photography, painting, textiles,
metalsmithing, and 16 mm film. The group of artists, each of whom brings =
a
vibrant and out-of-the-ordinary perspective to this exhibition includes:
Clare Murray Adams (Southington, OH), Nancy Stewart Matin (North Canton,
OH), Deborah Melton Anderson (Columbus, OH), Matthew Kolodziej (Akron, =
OH),
P.R. Miller (Akron, OH, formerly of Stark Cty.), M. Sean Mercer (Kent, =

Council;
and Massillon Eagles 190.=20
The Massillon Museum has produced a documentary that will be shown in =
the
gallery during the course of the exhibition. Directed by Museum =
Archivist
Mandy Altimus, the film will take viewers into the artists=92 studios =
and
working environments during the process of this commission. Audiences =
will,
therefore, witness not only the source of inspiration and finished =
product,
but will be able to experience something of the creative process =
involved in
adapting these artifacts. A DVD of the documentary will be included in =
the
exhibition catalog, a 28-page color booklet highlighting the Museum =
objects,
the artists, and the =93Adaptations=94 works of art.
The exhibition opening, which will be held on Saturday, August 19, from =
7:00
to 9:00 p.m., is free and open to the public. Participating artists =

A Cup of Comfort for Single Mothers Now through December 31st

As Oprah Winfrey has often said, parenting is the most difficult and
important job in the world. It can be even tougher for single mothers, =
who
face all the usual parenting challenges plus another whole set of unique
ones. But single motherhood also brings many untold rewards, for both =
moms
and children. For this collection of personal essays celebrating single
mothers, we seek uplifting true stories about the joys and the =
difficulties
of single mothering. The majority of stories selected for publication =
will
be written from the single mother=92s point of view, but we will also =
consider
stories written by the children of single mothers as well as by third
parties with intimate knowledge of (and the permission of) the single =
mother
and her child(ren). Possible themes include but are not limited to: =
Juggling
the myriad responsibilities of single motherhood ; Raising sons or =
daughters
without fathers; The support of family, friends, other mothers ; Hard
lessons learned; Busting myths about single mothering ; Defying =
stereotypes
about single moms and/or children of single moms; Overcoming adversity ;
Self-acceptance and self-respect in a society that sometimes disparages
single mothers; Unconventional wisdoms gained; Blessings, joys, and =
rewards
of being a single mother or the child of a single mother; The unique =
bond
between a single mother and her child(ren); The courage, resilience,
ingenuity, devotion, accomplishments, and/or integrity of a single mom; =
Why
you chose single motherhood (if applicable) and how you=92ve made it =
work; The
unexpected and/or under-recognized advantages, joys, and/or rewards of =
being
a single mother or having a single mother. Submission Deadline: December =
31,
