THE FAIRMOUNT SCHOOL OF WRITING PRESENTS

Two Great Fiction Workshops with Novelist, Film Producer, Scott Lax
FOR ADULTS: =20
Fiction Workshop: The World of the Novel

FOR TEENS: =20
Getting Started on Your Novel

FOR ADULTS: Fiction Workshop: The World of the Novel=20
Six consecutive Tuesday evenings=20
September 19 through October 24, from 7 PM - 9 PM=20
Mayfield Village Performing Arts Center. =20
$195
Texts will be supplied.

Join Scott Lax <http://www.scottlax.com/> for a completely different
kind of six-week workshop on novel writing. While it will cover the
usual writers' workshop basics of character development, plot and
setting, this workshop will delve into the utterly unique, beautiful and
sometimes terrifying world of the novel. Influenced by the ideas of
Milan Kundera (The Unbearable Lightness of Being; The Art of the Novel),
as well as by Tim O'Brien (The Things They Carried, July, July) and
other great fiction writers such as Philip Roth, Lax will guide workshop
participants on a trip into the minds and universes of literary
novelists, as well as the literary novel as an art form. We will talk
about these questions and more: What is a story and when is it worthy of
being turned into a novel? Where do imagination and experience connect
in your writing? How do you access your own truth and put it into novel
form? This is not a workshop that will teach you how to write the next
The Devil Wears Prada or help you get on Oprah. Rather, you should come
out of it with a better idea of whether you are willing to take the next
step to leave your own blood, sweat and tears on the page of your novel.

FOR TEENS: Getting Started on Your Novel=20
A workshop for teens with novelist Scott Lax
Ages 13 -18
$175.00
Thursdays, 6:30 - 8 beginning September 21=20
Mayfield Village Performing Arts Center=20

Novel and short-story writing are mysterious and daunting tasks for any
young writer. How do you get started? What does writing a novel or
short-story entail? What are the elements of the fiction that can help
you get published someday?=20

Join novelist and educator Scott Lax, whose award-winning first novel,
The Year That Trembled, a coming-of-age-story about a group of older
teens in the Chagrin Valley in 1970, which was turned into a full-length
feature film and a produced two-act stage play, for a six-week workshop
on the basics of novel and short-story writing. Take the journey
through character development, creating a believable setting, and the
art of dialogue, as we move toward a greater understanding of what being
a novelist is all about.

The workshop will entail talking, writing and a little reading-out-loud
for those students who are comfortable with it. For others, sit back,
write, learn and enjoy the thrill of creating a short novel or story of
your own over six weeks.

Scott has taught teenagers in high school settings. His goal is to
enhance the efforts of your teachers by helping you become a more
confident, skillful and enthusiastic writer.

At the end of the session two awards will be given: The Young Toni
Morrison Award and The Young Hemingway Award for class participants.
Come and enjoy the art of the novel and increase your creative writing
skills along the way.
