Jean ZarzourI have never written a personal review of a production in my 
entire life, so I am a bit self conscious.  However, it's worth the risk of 
being perceived as a self important opinionist because this production was 
that refreshing.

I can't recall when I have been so pleasantly surprised by any 
interpretation of a dusty old classic like My Fair Lady.  This production 
blows the dust right off in the first scene and just gets cleaner and 
cleaner as the night progresses.

It isn't a "new" interpretation by way of gender bending, "modern day" 
anything, or any other contrivances.  It's an interpretation that is still 
very traditional but pared down in every way; costumes, sets, and even 
orchestration seem hand selected, authentic and minimal but without 
compromising the integrity of the material.  It plays like 
Pygmalion......... with music. Just as I suspect Lerner and Lowe may have 
intended it to play with none of the Disney like spectacle that so many 
productions of it's size seem to fall back on in order to keep our 
deteriorating attention.  It is clean, real and powerful in every way, 
leaving all of the razzamatazz to the performers ability to engage us with 
honest, fully realized characters.

This production is staged, choreographed and performed masterfully, 
targeting the true message of  this story; that significant change occurs in 
your heart, not your wardrobe.

So..... Ascot hats off to director Amanda Dehnert, choreographer Kelli Wicke 
Davis each and every performer and The Cleveland Play House for having the 
good sense to bring this production here. Just see it! Especially if you are 
a musical theater performer.

You won't believe that you just spent two and a half hours thoroughly 
delighted by a play you did in high school!
