FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Baroque Violin Master John Holloway to Perform at the Oberlin =20
Conservatory of Music Oct. 31

OBERLIN, OHIO (Oct. 26, 2006)=97John Holloway, one of the most =20
celebrated baroque violinists of our time, will present a free, =20
public program of J.S. Bach=92s solo violin works in Oberlin on =20
Tuesday, Oct. 31, at 8 p.m. in the Conservatory=92s Kulas Recital Hall, =20=

located at 77 West College Street in Oberlin. Holloway will also =20
conduct a free, public master class on Wednesday, Nov. 1, from noon =20
to 1:30 p.m. in the Conservatory=92s Central Hall Room 32. For =20
additional information, please call the Conservatory=92s 24-hour =20
Concert Hotline at 440-775-6933 or visit www.oberlin.edu/con.

Holloway=92s Oberlin recital is part of a U.S. tour promoting his new =20=

album: J.S. Bach: The Sonatas and Partitas for Violin Solo. Featured =20
in the program will be several works from the recording: Partita No. =20
3 in E Major, Sonata No. 2 in A minor, and Partita No. 2 in D minor. =20
The Oberlin Conservatory of Music and its Historical Performance =20
Division sponsor Holloway=92s visit.

Specializing in repertoire from the baroque period (1600-1750), =20
Holloway perceives Bach in the context of his predecessors and =20
contemporaries, such as composers Schmelzer, Biber, and Veracini =20
(whose works he has presented in highly praised recordings in recent =20
years), rather than looking back from the perspective of romantic and =20=

modern violin literature. His approach helps to highlight the =20
extraordinary qualities of Bach=92s sonatas and partitas.

=93Obviously composers like Vilsmayr, Biber, Wethoff, and Pisendel =20
had written remarkable compositions for unaccompanied violin before =20
Bach,=94 says Holloway, =93but nothing really prepares us for this kind =20=

of perfection =85 One is faced with an unprecedented combination of =20
both musical quality, technical challenge, and intellectual range.=94

John Holloway is one of the pioneers of the modern early music =20
movement in Britain. After attending the Guildhall School of Music =20
and Drama, he spent time as concertmaster and manager of the =20
orchestra of Kent Opera, and he has appeared with all the prominent =20
chamber orchestras in London, as well as performed with contemporary =20
music and string quartets. In 1972, Holloway met Belgian conductor, =20
musician, and period violin teacher Sigiswald Kuijken, and =20
subsequently began performing on baroque violin. A veteran of many =20
ensembles, Holloway held the position of concertmaster of Andrew =20
Parrott=92s Taverner Players from 1977-1991, and of Roger Norrington=92s =
=20
London Classical Players from 1978-1992.
Holloway founded the ensemble L'Ecole d'Orph=E9e in 1975, which made =20=

the first complete recording on baroque instruments of Handel=92s =20
instrumental chamber music. In 1991, he was the recipient of a =20
Gramophone Award for his recording of Biber=92s Mystery Sonatas. Other =20=

recording projects have included an extended series of the music of =20
Buxtehude, including all of his chamber music, which was awarded a =20
Danish =93Grammy=94 in 1994 and in 1997. As a member of Trio Veracini he =
=20
made the only recording of Corelli=92s opus 5 sonatas with the =20
instrumentations specified by the composer. In addition, he has =20
performed and recorded with such distinguished colleagues as Emma =20
Kirkby, Stanley Ritchie and Andrew Manze, Davitt Moroney and Lars =20
Ulrik Mortensen, Marion Verbruggen, and Jaap ter Linden.

Holloway is also developing a conducting career. =46rom 2000-04 he was =20=

Musical Director of the Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra. In 2005 he =20
was appointed Music Director of New Trinity Baroque, a period =20
instrument ensemble and orchestra based in Atlanta.

Holloway has been Professor of Baroque Violin at the Guildhall School =20=

of Music and Drama in London, and guest professor at the Schola =20
Cantorum in Basel, Switzerland, and at the Early Music Institute at =20
Indiana University at Bloomington. In September 2004 he was Regents=92 =20=

Lecturer at the University of California Berkeley. Since 1999, he has =20=

held the position of Professor of Violin and String Chamber Music at =20
the Hochschule f=FCr Musik in Dresden, Germany.
