Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO), will conduct the Oberlin =20
Conservatory Symphony Orchestra, with pianist Pedja Muzijevic, in =20

The New York concert takes place in Carnegie Hall=92s Isaac Stern =20
Auditorium, Friday, January 26, at 8 p.m., with Muzijevic making his =20
Carnegie Hall debut. Also in Stern Auditorium, a 6:30 p.m. lecture/=20
discussion, =93Playing to Win: The Future of Great Music in the 21st =20
Century,=94 will precede the concert. The panel includes composer =20
Jennifer Higdon; music critic and historian James Keller; Aaron =20
Dworkin, founder and president of the Sphinx Organization; and =20
Professor of Music Theory Brian Alegant. Dean of the Oberlin =20
Conservatory of Music David H. Stull will moderate. Tickets for the =20

Spano, Professor of Conducting at the Conservatory, =20
earned his bachelor of music degree from Oberlin in 1983. He will be =20
in residence on campus in January, preparing the orchestra.

Recognized internationally as one of the brightest and =20
most imaginative conductors of his generation, Spano=92s innovative =20
programming has enriched and expanded the ASO=92s repertoire. He joined =20=

the ASO after eight years as Music Director of the Brooklyn =20
Philharmonic, where he also made his mark, leaving it at a new level =20
of international prominence. (His successor at the Brooklyn =20
Philharmonic is Michael Christie =9296, who studied with him as an =20
Oberlin student.)

=93All of us at Oberlin eagerly look forward to Maestro Spano=92s =20
presence on campus,=94 says Dean of the Conservatory David H. Stull. =20
=93His gifted leadership of young orchestras is legendary, and he has a =20=

unique ability to inspire young musicians to transcend their capacity.=94

Bosnian-born pianist Pedja Muzijevic previously shared =20
the stage with Spano during a concert of Hungarian music at the =20
Brooklyn Academy of Music Opera House in 1998. Jennifer Higdon=92s blue =20=

cathedral is one of the most performed orchestral works by a living =20
composer; 100 orchestras have performed the piece since its 2000 =20
premiere.

Robert Spano, conductor

Music Director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Robert Spano is =20
recognized internationally as one of the brightest and most =20
imaginative conductors of his generation. He has conducted nearly =20
every major North American orchestra and has appeared with the opera =20
companies of Seattle, Santa Fe, Chicago, and Houston. He is also =20
Music Director of the 2006 Ojai Music Festival.

Born in Conneaut, Ohio, and raised in Elkhart, Indiana, Mr. Spano =20
grew up in a musical family, playing flute, violin, and piano as well =20=

as composing. He studied with Robert Baustian at the Oberlin =20
Conservatory and with Max Rudolf at the Curtis Institute of Music. =20
His achievements have been recognized with honorary doctorates by =20
Bowling Green State University and the Curtis Institute of Music.

Jennifer Higdon, composer

Jennifer Higdon is one of America=92s most frequently performed =20
composers. Her works have been recorded on more than two dozen CDs. =20
In 2004, the Atlanta Symphony released the Grammy-winning Higdon: =20
Concerto for Orchestra/City Scape. Fall of 2006 sees the release of a =20=

CD of Higdon=92s music on Naxos, as well as a recording with eighth =20
blackbird. Higdon enjoys more than 200 performances a year of her =20
works. She teaches composition at the Curtis Institute of Music in =20
Philadelphia.

Pedja Muzijevic, piano

Making his Carnegie Hall debut, Pedja Muzijevic has been widely =20
praised for his interpretations of the standard literature and for =20
his imaginative programming. He has toured extensively throughout =20
eastern and western Europe, Great Britain, Canada, the United States, =20=

South America and Asia. Muzijevic has performed with the Milwaukee =20
Symphony, the Residentie Orkest in The Hague, Dresden Philharmonic, =20
and the Boston Pops. Recital appearances include the Frick Collection =20=

in New York, Lincoln Center, the 92nd Street Y and the Library of =20
Congress. Muzijevic studied at the Academy of Music in Zagreb, the =20
Curtis Institute of Music, and at the Juilliard School. He is the =20
Director of Music Programming at the Baryshnikov Arts Center in New =20
York City.

About the Oberlin Conservatory Symphony Orchestra
and the Oberlin Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College

After Sir Simon Rattle conducted the Oberlin Chamber Orchestra in =20
December 2004, Plain Dealer music critic Donald Rosenberg wrote that =20
the concert was =93stamped by magnificence.=94 Indeed, Rosenberg =
included =20
the Oberlin-Rattle performance of Mahler=92s Symphony No. 4, which he =20=

described as =93uncommonly rich in poetry and drama,=94 in his list of =20=

top 10 memorable events from the 2004 concert season.

Magnificence has come to be synonymous with all aspects of the =20
Oberlin Conservatory of Music, from its exacting standards for =20
incoming students to the excellence in teaching and performance =20
expected of its faculty and the notable careers of its alumni, who =20
can be found performing in every major orchestra and opera house and =20
with many of today=92s acclaimed chamber ensembles.

Founded in 1865 and situated amid the intellectual vitality of =20
Oberlin College since 1867, Oberlin is the oldest continuously =20
operating conservatory in the United States. An undergraduate =20
institution, Oberlin is renowned internationally as a professional =20
music school of the highest caliber and has been called a =93national =20=

treasure=94 by the Washington Post.

Past guest conductors of the Oberlin Orchestra have included Marin =20
Alsop, Pierre Boulez, Catherine Comet, Tan Dun, Eve Queler, Robert =20
Shaw, Oscar Shumsky, Igor Stravinsky, composer John Williams, and =20
Hugh Wolff.

Recent appearances by Oberlin=92s orchestra include a performance at =20
Cleveland=92s Severance Hall, home of the Cleveland Orchestra, under =20
the baton of music director and conductor Bridget-Michaele Reischl =20
during the 2005-06 season, and a tour of China. For more information =20
