ABOUT VIKTOR SCHRECKENGOST?

=20

Often called an "American Da Vinci," and just as versatile as his 15th
Century Italian counterpart, Schreckengost is "not only a noted painter,
potter and sculptor, he also excelled in product design-everything from
artificial limbs to velocipedes," writes Art Historian Henry Adams.
Schreckengost's iconic works span the "Jazz Bowl" produced by Cowan
Pottery in Rocky River, Ohio, for Eleanor Roosevelt to his series of
Murray bicycles and pedal cars to his American Limoges dinnerware.  He
has been credited as one of the pioneers of modern industrial design, a
field that came to be in the late 1920s just about the time
Schreckengost started his professional career as an artist and teacher
at the Cleveland Institute of Art.=20

Schreckengost has become a legend,  and he has touched the lives of
almost every American through his designs and artwork.  His career has
left a wake of innovation from aerial maps for the military,
flashlights, pedal cars, riding lawn mower, ceiling lighting and
dinnerware.  So many of his designs were readily produced and accessible
to a public that shopped or bought products from Sears, Roebuck and
Company, J.C. Penney, Goodyear, Delta Electric and others. In fact,
there is probably not a person in the United States today who has not
handled products designed by either Viktor or his students.  Reflecting
the artist's creed that "good design should be available to everyone, "
the exhibit at the Beth K. Stocker Art Gallery includes examples of work
from the artist's long career, including drawings, paintings, prints, a
newly released limited edition set of the "Jazz Bowl," and an African
sculpture titled "Jedda."  Also represented are examples of
Schreckengost's industrial design work, including a signature pedal car
and a lawn chair.=20

In November, 2006, Viktor Schreckengost  was presented one of ten 2006
National Medal of the Arts by President George W. Bush and Mrs. Laura
Bush in an Oval Office ceremony at the White House, where he was
recognized for his enduring contribution to the artistic life and
national culture of our nation by "bringing genius to the design of
everyday objects."  Today, Viktor Schreckengost continues to make art, a
testament to the zest that has propelled him through his most creative
life.
