Cellist Matt Haimovitz joins CityMusic Cleveland:
February 21-25

January 9, 2007, CLEVELAND =97 Cellist Matt Haimovitz has established =20=

himself as an adventurous artist, equally at ease playing in the =20
world's major concert halls as he is bringing music to new listeners =20
in surprising new venues. Born in Israel and now living in Montreal, =20
Haimovitz has been "busily reinventing the classical recital for the =20
new millennium." He has won renown for his recent "Listening-Room" =20
Tour, taking Bach's beloved cello suites out of the concert hall and =20
performing them in intimate clubs and coffeehouses across the U.S., =20
Canada, and the U.K. Among other places, he's played in New York =20
City's infamous CBGB club and the Beachwood Ballroom in Collingwood, =20
Ohio.

Matt's music-making philosophy is a perfect match for CityMusic =20
Cleveland, the professional chamber orchestra and arts outreach =20
organization -- called =93electrifying=94 by the Plain Dealer -- now in =20=

its third season.

So it is a great privilege for CityMusic Cleveland to team up with =20
Matt Haimovitz for performances February 21-25, 2007, throughout =20
Northeast Ohio. Under the direction of guest conductor Danail Rachev, =20=

CityMusic and Matt Haimovitz give concerts in Elyria, Rocky River, =20
Slavic Village, Cleveland Heights, and Willoughby.

Born in Bulgaria, Danail Rachev is currently the Assistant Conductor =20
of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Trained in Sofia and at the Peabody =20=

Conservatory, he served as a conducting fellow of the New World =20
Symphony before being appointed to the DSO. He has been praised for =20
his =93vigorous, boldly projected=94 and =93fluent and sensitive=94 =
conducting.

The repertoire for CityMusic is chosen for its appeal to a wide-=20
ranging audience, including those who are new to orchestral concerts. =20=

February's program features Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony #2 in D =20
Major and "The Fair Melusine" Overture by Felix Mendelssohn, as well =20
as the Franz Joseph Haydn Cello Concerto in C, which will be led from =20=

the cello by Haimovitz.

Composed of many of the finest free-lance musicians in the area, =20
CityMusic Cleveland is dedicated to developing new audiences for =20
classical music and serving as a catalyst for community building. The =20=

ensemble collaborates with mayors, council members, and other =20
community leaders to strengthen the cultural excellence of their =20
communities. By removing geographic and financial barriers, CityMusic =20=

strives to nurture appreciation for live classical performance=97and =20
other cultural events=97and create the next generation of arts patrons.

The performances are informal and the musicians don=92t hesitate to =20
show their joy in sharing this music with their listeners. =20
Intermission receptions at most concerts offer audience members and =20
musicians an opportunity to share refreshments & conversation, while =20
enjoying the artwork of local visual artists. The exhibit for =20
February features paintings by Cleveland artist Sarah Curry.

All of CityMusic Cleveland=92s concerts are FREE and open to the =20
public. Families with children are welcome; many of the venues also =20
offer free childcare. For more information, call 216-321-8273; send =20
email to info at CityMusicCleveland.org; or visit =20
www.CityMusicCleveland.org.
