=20
Quirks and quarks:  =20
Smaller but just as challenging, Peter Parnell's "QED" takes us to the Cal=20
Tech office of Feynman, a Nobel-winning pioneer of quantum electrodynamics,=
 a=20
member of the team that invented the atomic bomb, a bongo player and a=20
practical joker.  =20
It's a fascinating examination  of a quirky guy who didn't mince words,=20
particularly as a co-author of a report on the Challenger disaster. Quarks=20=
and=20
photons fly, and so do ideas about existence and defining it. =20
And it's a chance for an actor to command a stage in near-solitude (a=20
student shows up a few times) as a huge personality (as did Alan Alda in Ne=
w York).=20
=20
Actors' Summit artistic director Neil Thackaberry acquits himself well unde=
r=20
the steady, sure direction of Wayne Turney. =20
Thackaberry stumbles a few times on the play's voluminous and complex=20
language but touches us with Feynman's exuberance about the Southern Siberi=
an state=20
of Tuva, his lasting love for his dead wife and his own battle with the=20
cancer that would eventually kill him in 1988. =20
Continues through Sunday, Jan. 28, at 86 Owen Brown St., Hudson. $22-$25.=20
330-342-0800. =20

_REVIEW: PHYSICIST LARGER THAN LIFE AT ACTORS=E2=80=99 SUMMIT_=20

Posted on January 17th,  2007.=20
Anyone who thought scientists were just dry, nerdy, solitary types should=20
take a look at Actors=E2=80=99 Summit=E2=80=99s QED to learn about the hig=
hly colorful=20
Richard Feynman, an exuberantly eccentric, real-life American physicist.=20
As director Wayne Turney said, this guy did break the mold: The famous Nobe=
l=20
Laureate who reinvented how physicists think worked on the atom bomb and=20
served on the federal commission that investigated the space shuttle Challe=
nger =20
disaster.=20
But Feynman also was a thespian and a bongo drummer, and developed a wacky=20
obsession for the Russian land of Tuva.=20
The story takes place in Feynman=E2=80=99s office at the California Institu=
te of=20
Technology in 1988. Feynman =E2=80=94 who is musing over his life as he con=
templates=20
death =E2=80=94 is continually interrupted by phone calls and visitors.=20
This is largely a one-man show, and actor/artistic director Neil Thackaberr=
y=20
is up to the  part.
