"A rather surprising thing happened at the Palace
Theatre in Playhouse Square on the opening night of
the touring production of =E2=80=98THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA.=20
During the curtain call following the show, no one
stood up. Yes, it was Cleveland, Ohio, the home of
the automatic standing ovation, and nary a soul jumped
out of a seat!"
This paragraph makes it sound as if Mr. Berko doesn't care much for the=20
very audiences that he is allegedly providing his reviews for.
I see this comment from "critics" all the time, and it makes no sense.
What do you care if an audience chooses to give a standing ovation? If you d=
on't feel the cast
deserves it, you are welcome to remain seated. You are not under any obligat=
ion to stand.=20
Why criticize the audience?=20
