REVIEW: MIXED FEELINGS ABOUT PIAZZA
=20
The Light in the Piazza has an emotional arc that can sweep you away, if you=
give this tender musical a chance.
=20
The story is simply beautiful and the music is profoundly complex in its gor=
geous, soaring melodies. We=E2=80=99re talking about exploring the heights o=
f love here, although a key casting problem prevents the touring production=20=
from fully taking flight during its stop at Cleveland=E2=80=99s Palace Theat=
re.
=20
The show, with music written by Adam Guettel (Richard Rodgers=E2=80=99 grand=
son) and book by Craig Lucas, is unlike most of the musical theatrical produ=
ctions you=E2=80=99d see these days. Piazza won six Tony Awards, with two no=
ds for Guettel and many critics calling him the musical composer of the new=20=
millennial generation.=20
=20
Piazza has nothing to do with bells, whistles or stage magic: The score=E2=
=80=99s operatic sweep was created to speak the language of love in Italy, w=
here the language barrier between a young American woman and a handsome Ital=
ian man is transcended.
