Cleveland Public Theatre presents

Sleep Deprivation Chamber

=20

Only 3 performances remain!

=20

While nationally acclaimed playwright Adrienne Kennedy was in rehearsal
at Cleveland's Ohio Theatre, her son was beaten by police and charged
with assaulting an officer. Sleep Deprivation Chamber follows her
sleepless nights and her son's fight for justice.

=20

Tony Brown of The Plain Dealer raves:

=20

Reality, according to Sleep Deprivation Chamber, exists both in the
hard-and-fast physical world and in the subconscious mind that processes
it. An officer in the tony Washington, D.C., suburb stopped Adam
Kennedy, a black man. He pulled his car into a driveway, confronted the
cop, took a beating and was charged with assault.

=20

Here's what the officer didn't know: The driveway was at Kennedy's
father's house; and Kennedy's mother, Adrienne, is a prominent New York
playwright.

Mother and son wrote separately. Adam stuck to the facts.

=20

The marriage of these view points creates a frisson that keeps the
energy flowing for the play's 90 minutes.... It's hard to imagine a
better staging of the play than Caroline Jackson Smith's stark,
expansive use of the grand old Gordon Square Theatre, lighted
dramatically by designer Trad A Burns.

=20

Jackson Smith deftly manipulates a nine-member ensemble while three
others turn in strong individual performances, led by Lisa Langford's
stunning evocation of the playwright at her desk trying to work out her
demons.

=20

Each CPT performance will be followed by moderated panel discussions
featuring distinguished scholars and professionals. CPT is partnering
with the Cleveland State University Black Studies Department and the
Cleveland NAACP to coordinate and plan these important post-show
discussions.
