"Mongolian Ping Pong"
Friday, February 16 - 8:00 pm

2005 (G) 102 min. China/Mongolia/subtitles
Director: Ning Hao
Cast: Hurichabilike, Dawa, Geliban

Three young boys living in the remote grasslands of Mongolia are
mystified by a ping pong ball they discover floating in a stream one
day. Is it an egg? A pearl? Even the wisest people in their small
village don't know, so they set off on a grand adventure - through
magnificent landscapes - to find out the truth. This is a beautifully
shot, deceptively symbolic film about three boys living with their
families on the edge of the Gobi desert. In its clearest, comic terms
it's the story of their confusion when they find a ping pong ball
floating down the river; in deeper, symbolic ones, it's a more dramatic
illustration of how an ancient people now finds itself caught between
two worlds. The boys may have found a small plastic ball, but they're
the ones who are caught in a game of ping pong, slammed back and forth
between their ancestors' culture and the modern world. Before the film
is over, one boy will have gone away to school in the city; his sister
will have left her boyfriend to join a dance troupe. It is a new era of
opportunity for both of them, to be sure. But, the film suggests,
they've bought that chance by selling their sense of wonder. Speaking of
the film, Michael Atkinson of THE VILLAGE VOICE says, "Could be a
meditational film - if, perhaps, it wasn't a sneaky comedy and, to boot,
one of the most breathtaking cinematic records of landscape and sky ever
filmed!" This beautiful, gentle film is suitable for children who don't
mind subtitles.
